DIY ventilation in the garage: types, operating principles, instructions

When constructing a warm room for parking a personal car, ventilation is not provided. But in the absence of a constant exchange of air, ideal conditions are created for the oxidation not only of the body from the outside, but also from the inside. Therefore, in this article we will figure out how to create a high-quality ventilation system in our garage.

Why do ventilation?

The process of replacing indoor air with outdoor air, which ensures temperature conditions, cleanliness and normal indoor humidity is called ventilation (translated from Latin - ventilation). It must be arranged in all rooms. No exception - a garage for a personal car.

Garage ventilation

To eliminate the negative effects of aggressive factors, even in a well-heated garage in winter it is necessary to arrange regular ventilation of the room, because good ventilation performs a number of significant tasks:

  1. Decrease in humidity indoors. Snow and dirt on the underbody, fenders, a wet car after driving in rainy weather are factors that dramatically increase humidity. Quality ventilation is designed to remove excess moisture in the air.
  1. Exhaust gas removal. A working engine saturates the garage with exhaust gases that are harmful not only to human health, but also to the car. The evaporation of oils and toxic liquids also occurs.
  2. Drying the car. With good ventilation, moisture “brought” from the street is quickly removed from the surface of the car.
  3. Body protection. Evaporation from a hot engine, oils, paints, moisture, dirt create favorable conditions for the formation of corrosion on all metal parts, tools that are indoors.
  4. Climate control in the garage. Stable vehicle maintenance in a dry, ventilated area is a guarantee of the durability of the body and other components of the car.

Garage ventilation types

Having made sure of the need to create a ventilation system in the garage, it is worth understanding its types. According to regulatory documents, room ventilation is effective while providing an 8-10-fold air exchange per unit of time. As a rule, one of three types of ventilation is installed in the storage room for a personal car:

  1. Natural.

The easiest option. On the entrance side, a supply opening is arranged at the bottom of the wall. On the opposite wall - exhaust. The inlet opening, which should be 2 times larger than the exhaust, is closed by a transfer grill. A deflector is installed on the exhaust lumen - a device for creating an area of reduced pressure under the influence of atmospheric air outside the building. The deflector is fixed 1 m above the edge of the roof.

The exchange of air masses in a room intended for car parking is ensured by:

  • simultaneous effects of wind on the deflector and entrance gate;
  • differences in density, temperature of the removed and external air.

The presented video demonstrates the principle of operation of the deflector of various designs, as well as where and in which cases each constructive model is installed.

  1. Combined.

Such ventilation is due to the natural influx of air into the room and forced removal.

An electric fan, usually of low power, is installed at the outlet, which guarantees high-quality removal of contaminated, moist air. Such ventilation is only effective when the exhaust fan is running.

  1. Mechanical

The intake of fresh and the removal of used air is provided by separate mechanical devices.

The supply mechanism consists of a set of filters and a heating system for the incoming air. External air from the environment through the suction unit is fed into the room, initially undergoing filtration and, if necessary, heating. The ventilation ducts are fixed at floor level for distribution over the entire area of the room.

The exhaust system collects air under the ceiling of the structure, and with the help of an air duct with a duct or axial fan, it is released into the atmosphere.

The principle of ventilation

Natural. Air exchange in a closed parking lot with natural ventilation should be around the clock. In summer, both gates open completely. In winter, the air inlet is immediately covered. When large frosts occur, an exhaust opening is covered by an adjustment gate. Thus, the ventilation of the garage will occur continuously.

Combined. When the removal motor is turned off, the system works poorly, does not guarantee complete air exchange. To increase the efficiency of such ventilation in the absence of a person in the garage, use a relay installation, which through for a certain time turns on / off the electric motor installed on the side of removal of the "exhausted" air mixtures. The vagaries of weather, atmospheric phenomena do not affect the effectiveness of airing the garage. In winter, to prevent hypothermia, the air flow is manually regulated.

The principle of ventilation

Mechanical Ventilation of this kind has no drawbacks. The process of air intake and removal in the garage is carried out in automatic mode with simultaneous cleaning of solid impurities and heating in the winter. The flow of supplied air is organized at the floor level, the exhaust intake at the top, providing high quality ventilation.

With all the advantages of a mechanical ventilation system, there is an important issue without which such a system it does not make sense to install: reliability of power supply, absence of voltage drops and systematic outages. If there are flaws in the stable electrical supply, ventilation will not perform its functions qualitatively.

Tips for creating a garage ventilation system

The ventilation device in the car storage room is carried out in compliance with the mandatory rules, because ignoring them leads to inefficiency of the ventilation process:

  1. Before starting the arrangement of ventilation, the calculated total diameter of the inlet and outlet is determined: 1.5 cm for each square meter of the garage area.
  2. The lower ventilation duct must not be positioned higher than 150 mm from the level of the clean floor. Upper - 100 mm below the ceiling.
  3. The deflector must not be lower than 500 mm from the top edge of the roof. The most effective ventilation system when the difference between the inlet and the top of the deflector is at least 3 m.
  4. Insulation of the exhaust pipe will help to prevent condensation on the hood.
  5. The supply and exhaust ducts cannot be located on the same wall. This is best done diagonally in the room.
  6. On the supply channel, grilles are better to install, better than adjustable blinds.
  7. The delivered fan in the supply pipe acts as a supercharger of air, improving at times the air exchange in the room. Acceptable option for operating cars in the "wet" season.
  8. For a mechanical ventilation device, it is better to purchase ready-made modules or a monoblock.

The presented video shows the principle of non-volatile natural ventilation in a garage with a basement and the features of its structural device.

Some requirements for safe work

Compliance with the elementary safety rules when performing work on the ventilation device will create comfortable conditions and ensure the impossibility of injury by the contractor:

  1. First aid kit for first aid.
  2. Providing a sufficient level of lighting for the place of work.
  3. Use of personal protective equipment (gloves, goggles, respirators, work clothes and shoes).
  4. Before using the power tool (electric drill, rotary hammer, grinder), check the operability of the switches, the grounding device.
  5. It is strictly forbidden to operate power tools in poorly lit places.
  6. It is impossible to work on a ladder without appropriate insurance.
  7. After completing work, the power tool must be de-energized.
  8. If the street is snowing, rain, ice, it is forbidden to mount the deflector on the roof.
  9. When mounting pipe sections of ducts at a height, it is forbidden for people to be under the pipes.

Assembling the "right" ventilation in the garage with your own hands is not very difficult. Choosing a certain type, you need to focus on financial opportunities, but do not forget that high-quality ventilation in the garage is the key to long-term maintenance of the car in good condition.
