In the winter season, cases often occur when water in the pipes freezes. Most often this applies to those pipes that were not deeply buried during installation, or their insulation was not carried out effectively. Despite the complexity of the situation, it is possible to carry out defrosting pipes on their own.
Some defrosting methods are ineffective, but in some cases their application is possible. For example, using a conventional hairdryer is only advisable when the pipe is in direct access. For pipes that are far away, you should not use this method.
The metal pipe is defrosted as follows:
- Provide access to pipe ends between which an ice plug has appeared;
- Connect the welding machine to each end of the pipe;
- Wait until the current that passes through the pipe and ice begins to melt the resulting cork and the cross section of the pipe becomes free.
It is worth considering that this method is not recommended for those people who do not have experience in using a welding machine. In this case, it is better to entrust such work to professionals, since doing it yourself can be dangerous.
This method can only be used for metal pipes, it is categorically not suitable for plastic pipes, since plastic is dielectric. But in this case, ice can be melted with hot water. In this case, it is desirable that the liquid for thawing pipes was in the form of a concentrated saline solution of boiled water.
It is not recommended to simply pour boiling water into the pipe, since this will not bring absolutely any results. Water will not be able to pass through the pipe where the ice plug is located. It is important to arrange the supply of hot water directly to the location of the ice plug. This can be arranged using a hose or a flexible pipe of smaller diameter compared to a frozen pipe. The prepared pipe must be pushed into the frozen pipe until the end of it abuts against the frozen cork. Only after this can you begin to directly pour boiled water. Between the thin and thick pipes, cold water will flow out. When the cork begins to thaw, it is pushed further. Manipulation is carried out until the pipe is completely released.
