Signs that ventilation in the apartment is not working well

If the apartment has some stale air, often unpleasant odors occur, and the aromas of the culinary masterpieces of the neighbors are felt in the bathroom, then these are the first signs of poorly functioning ventilation.

Residential ventilation functions

Initially, in each house, the ventilation system was created thoughtfully so that it was possible to draw out unpleasant odors, dirty air and dust, so that there was no dampness and mold on the walls. Instead of exhaust air, fresh air comes in for ventilation.

Why ventilation fails

Many people knowingly harm the ventilation system of the house by specially closing the exhaust pipes, inserting fans into the ventilation shafts in the bathroom. Many clean cold cabinets in the kitchen, close mines and install their own hood.

Due to all these manipulations, the original ventilation system does not fully perform its functions, the air closes its circle between several apartments.

Therefore, unpleasant aromas stagnate in living quarters. With any impact on the ventilation valve, the entire mechanism breaks.

Signs that ventilation is not working properly

If smells during cooking spread from an open window to other rooms, then ventilation does not work well. Other signs include the abnormal formation of dampness on the walls, the appearance of fungus or mold, windy air, unpleasant odors, and the laundry dries up for several days.

Another characteristic sign of poorly functioning ventilation: dust accumulation on the ventilation grill and in the shaft, as well as in the upper corners of the rooms. In this case, dust begins to accumulate two days after wet cleaning.

What measures to take

To improve the air circulation in the room, you can use one trick: in the bathroom and toilet rooms under the door you need to make a small gap, which will ensure the supply of fresh air to these premises.

The operation of home ventilation can be checked with a lit flame, a lighter or a candle, which is brought to the ventilation shaft. If the flame is drawn into the hole, then the system is more or less working.

If the ventilation system "stood up", then you need to contact the house management. It is possible to independently clean only the grate and the visible part of the shaft; further this cannot be done. The systems are cleaned about once every three years, more often - according to the numerous complaints of residents about unpleasant odors in apartments.
