In the buildings of the "Stalinist era", where there are very high ceilings and a well-thought-out system of ventilation ducts, it is easy to breathe without opening the windows. Modern apartments and offices boast only plastic windows, construction and finishing materials that release toxic substances into the air.
Keeping windows constantly open is not an option:
- In winter, heated air is replaced by cold air. If the house has autonomous heating, when the temperature drops, the automatic heating will turn on, and the monthly consumption of gas or electricity will increase.
- In offices and offices of institutions, an open window means the risk of losing a valuable employee: he will get sick and go to "sick leave" at the most inopportune time.
- Outside the window is a noisy highway, a railway track, a plant working for days. I just don't want to open the window to breathe in the exhaust.
- Emergencies that, unfortunately, have become commonplace: a burning trash can, smoldering leaves in the fall, forest or peat fires.
- The room is semi-basement. Even if there is a park outside the window, all the garbage will fall into the room.
- In the wards of hospitals, intensive care units, people with weakened immunity lie. The slightest draft will provoke a deterioration in well-being.
- There is a small child and it is not safe to open the windows wide open.

Ready-made solutions
- Window valve
- Breezer, air conditioner
- Humidifiers, purifier, ionizers
Lack of oxygen is a solvable problem. Complete air conditioning systems, ozonizers or special air intakes on the windows are offered by manufacturers in a wide price range.
Window valve
Window valves are "attachments" on the frame that allow you to ventilate the room without opening the transom. Serious window manufacturers equip their products during production.
Window valves are made:
- automatic;
- operating in manual mode.
This is the simplest ventilation device - a visor with a mesh outside and inside the room. There is a valve that can be adjusted either manually or automatically.
Advice. The shutter also works when the humidity inside the room rises. This is a good solution for unopened bathroom windows.
When buying, you can choose a model with noise insulation, blocking sharp gusts of wind, with an anti-mosquito net.
Breezer, air conditioner
Ventilators, or breathers, win fans thanks to their simple and quick installation and budget cost. For air intake, a through hole is drilled in the wall. The air intake remains outside and the distributor inside. The flow of fresh air is directed along the walls, there are no drafts in such rooms.

The width of the breather does not exceed the width of a standard office document, the height is no more than half a meter. The part visible from the side of the room is made in different colors. Due to the rounded shapes, the device turns into an additional interior decoration.
Main advantages:
- Intuitive operation: the mode is set on the display by pressing one button.
- Low power consumption.
- Quiet work;
- Timer;
- Cleans dust and pollen (important for allergy sufferers), debris in the wind;
- There are models that heat the incoming air flow;
- The simplest installation that does not require cosmetic repairs.
The familiar air conditioners save people in the heat. The air purification function is often shifted to them. Disadvantages of this method:
- chilled air creates the illusion of clean air: it is easier to breathe in a cool room;
- to breathe fresh air, you need to clean the filter at least once a day (for an office space).
Important: air intake was carried out by old window air conditioners. Modern models only ventilate the air space. Fresh oxygen is not supplied.
Humidifiers, purifier, ionizers
This is a whole class of devices that provide climate control in a room. All functions can be combined in one device (and aromatization, as a bonus). But there are also devices on sale that perform only one task.

Purpose of purifiers - to clean the air from dust particles, humidifiers - to saturate dry air with molecules water, ionizers - get rid of germs and bacteria, increase the amount of breathable oxygen.
Cleaners are used in work:
- electrostatics, when dust particles are attracted by an electromagnetic field;
- the simplest filters, usually carbon;
- distillation, where an air stream is driven through an oily liquid, and large particles of debris settle;
- chemical catalysts, during which toxic impurities are decomposed and oxidized.
Air washers (purifier + humidifier), even expensive models, are noisy in operation, require careful handling and special additives. It is difficult enough to clean. Humidification is possible only when using additional special liquid, and not ordinary ice (as is found in full-fledged climate control models). And the ergonomics are lame: the remote control is usually not provided in the kit, and the display cannot be turned off at night.
Ozonizers are good because they kill pathogenic microorganisms, neutralize unpleasant odors. But they can be used in work no more than 20 minutes for one living room. And after... it is recommended to ventilate, or not to enter the room for a while. Oxygen ions irritate mucous membranes, a common symptom: sore throat.
Thanks to the variety of techniques that maintain the purity of the airspace in the room, it is possible to breathe deeply and without opening windows. The main thing is to understand the principles of operation and properly operate the device.
