Air exchange is an integral part of a comfortable indoor environment. The correct organization of ventilation contributes to the health of the respiratory tract, increasing general immunity. The installation of the system is carried out by qualified specialists of a narrow profile, their work is almost completely hidden from the eyes of others.
For viewing, only a ventilation hole is available, which is usually covered with a special grill. It can be inline or overhead. Built-in is located inside, forms a single unit with the ventilation system. The overhead is at the same time part of the ventilation system and the interior. It has a number of important functions.

The appearance of the lattice was caused by the need to cover an unsightly dark hole of a large size.
Modern technologies provide it with a number of functions:- hole decoration;
- distribution and direction of air flow;
- filtration of incoming air;
- reduction of the noise level from the operation of the ventilation system.
We classify decorative grilles
Ventilation systems are not visible, we rarely think about their existence. They exist everywhere: in kitchens, in residential, public, industrial premises. The variety of their uses has led to the emergence of a wide range. When choosing a decorative ventilation grill, it is advisable to first determine its main characteristics. Classification will help here.
By appointment
Depending on the requirements, you can set unregulated or regulated lattice. The price of the regulated one is much higher.
The main function of the unregulated is decorative. It will also detain objects that can get into the room from the ventilation (fluff, debris, etc.). The smaller the holes in the pattern, the higher the filtration.
Reference! If you know about the presence of insects in your neighbors (for example, cockroaches, etc.), it is better to close the hole with a damper with a fine mesh pattern or with a mosquito net.
Adjustable grilles, in addition to the above listed possibilities, can direct and regulate the force of the air flow. Their designs use special valves, louvers, filters, manually or automatically controlled.
At the place of installation
Decoration ventilation grilles can block any openings for air exchange, not limited to the ventilation system. The location can be:
- on the walls inside the room;
- on the facades of buildings for ventilation of attics, basements, and other utility rooms;
- on the ceiling;
- at the doors of bathrooms, living rooms, in public places;
- in cabinet doors;
- on the floor, usually with heating.
By construction type
Ventilation grilles have different designs, from simple to complex, capable of independently choosing the desired operating mode.
The built-in fan forcibly creates a draft of a sufficiently large force. Before installing it, you need to make sure that electricity is supplied to the hole, or supply it.
In the absence of a fan, the air flow can be regulated by movable louvers. Their slats are fixed at the sides, opening and closing, increasing or decreasing the throughput. Regulation can be manual or automatic.
The shut-off valve shuts off the air flow if it does not go in the right direction. The valve is a thin partition that can be folded in half in one direction. The installation is carried out in such a way that when the air moves in the desired direction, the halves of the partition are connected and do not impede the flow. Otherwise, the halves are straightened, blocking the opening of the ventilation hole, preventing air movement.
The principle of operation of inertial louvers is similar to that of a valve. Their slats only rise when the air flow is in the right direction.
Diffusers create an obstacle to the flow of air already inside the room, direct it along the walls. This design provides an inflow of fresh air without causing discomfort.
The design of the ventilation grill allows not only to organize the air flow, but also to reduce noise pollution. For this, a sound-absorbing layer is used in the structure, which does not interfere with the movement of air.
To prevent insects from entering the room, mosquito nets are additionally mounted.
By type of material
The most common materials are plastic, metal. Plastic grates are lightweight, cheap. Their disadvantage is weak resistance to temperature and humidity changes.
Metal grilles are made of aluminum, galvanized and stainless steel. Each metal has its own advantages and disadvantages. Aluminum does not rust, but it bends under light loads. Galvanized steel is strong but corrosive. Stainless steel is durable, does not corrode, but its price is significantly higher than aluminum or galvanized.
A small but stable niche in the market of ventilation grilles is occupied by brass, copper, bronze, as well as custom made from any other metal. As a rule, such grilles complement expensive repairs.
Wooden ventilation grilles look elegant in rooms made of wood or with wood trim. In other rooms, such a choice is not particularly rational due to the low resistance of the material to external influences, especially to moisture.
Choosing the right decorative lattice
When choosing, you need to determine the priorities. They differ depending on the room. Estimate the operating conditions and the desired result:
- how important is the aesthetic role;
- the likelihood of loads such as pressure, shock;
- is there enough natural cravings;
- how important is the direction of the air flow;
- temperature, its drops;
- humidity.
For example, for a kitchen or bathroom, an intense outflow of air is important. For living rooms, access to fresh air is important, while the flow rate is not so relevant. For installation on the facade of a house, a sturdy construction is required that is resistant to temperature and humidity changes.
Installation features
The simplest and lightest gratings are attached to the wall with self-tapping screws with dowels or spacers.
A special frame is installed under the massive ones on the wall and ventilation hole. Between the frame and the place of its attachment, it is advisable to install a rubber gasket to avoid vibration. Most reliably, the frame is attached to the dowels. The use of liquid nails or glue is acceptable. In this case, you will need to dry them properly according to the instructions (usually about a day). The damper is mounted over the frame.
