Cooker hood

What is the hood used for and how does it work?

The hood provides air exchange in the room. During cooking, it is impossible to avoid the appearance of soot, grease, as well as odors, sometimes unpleasant. Over time, dirt, mixing with dust, settles on the walls. As a result, your kitchen looks untidy, a lot of time is spent on cleaning. A kitchen air purifier solves these problems.

  1. Flow-through type. The polluted air is cleaned by filtration, passes through the ventilation system and is discharged outside. Suitable for a spacious room, e.g. 20 sq. m.
  2. Recirculating. The polluted air is cleaned using a filter and then released back fresh. Not as efficient as the flow-through type, the result strongly depends on the quality and condition of the filters, but this option is also much cheaper. Suitable for your own home, where it is more difficult to remove ventilation yourself. It will also be a good solution for a small kitchen area, for example, 6m2.

What are the criteria for choosing a hood

There are a huge number of models of hoods. They all differ in performance, filtration method, installation type, design and color, as well as other characteristics. We will tell you what kind of hoods there are for the kitchen.

Filter system

The polluted air purification system consists of two plates: disposable or reusable. The first ones resemble a plastic cassette, the cleaning surface is made of padding polyester. A dirty filter should be replaced. Reusable steel or aluminum version. Contaminated elements are not removed, but cleaned and reinserted.

Filters can be coarse and fine. Coarse cleaning, otherwise called grease cleaning, since the metal mesh of the filter retains large particles of fat. It is used in flow type hoods. Fine cleaning is also called coal cleaning, it retains fat, smoke, soot. Such a filter must be replaced, it is used in recirculation models. There is also an additional mesh made of synthetic material. It also needs to be changed as it gets dirty.

Modern hoods have a double filtration system: they eliminate air polluting particles and unpleasant odors. Air loses about 96% of harmful impurities.

Exterior and design of the hood

When it comes to how to choose a range hood, different designs need to be taken into account:

  1. Suspended. It is successful among buyers due to its low price and ease of installation. Works in circulation mode, uses reusable filters. Most often, it is mounted to the wall or mounted under a cabinet.
  2. Dome. Another common name is fireplace. It looks like an umbrella with a pipe, it can work in both flow and circulation modes. It looks stylish, serves as an interior decoration, and therefore costs more.
  3. Built-in. This option must be built into a hanging cabinet with an open bottom above the stove. It connects to the duct, does not look bulky, as it is completely hidden in the closet. The cost is less than that of the dome models, because the money does not go to decorating the decor.
  4. Ostrovnaya. This model is mounted above the island tabletop located in the center of the room. More often flow type, but there is also recirculation. It is quite expensive, but it looks impressive and modern.

About fans and their power

An electric hood for the kitchen contains one or two fans. The hood power depends on the power of the fans. This is where the concept of productivity comes from.

Performance is the most important characteristic of every cleaning device. Productivity is the sum of how many cubic meters of air the device can clean or remove into the ventilation shaft per hour of operation. Usually, this indicator fluctuates between values of 200-800 m3 / h.

The higher the power of the hood, the louder it will work. There are no absolutely silent models, but there are different modes of operation, with the minimum of which you can achieve a quiet, not annoying sound.

Control panel - which one is better?

The control panel is always present on the outside of the case and controls the operating modes of the device. They also come in different types:

  1. Push-button. Simple option. The panel contains buttons, each of which turns on and off a certain mode of operation. Among the disadvantages: the buttons may stop pressing if you do not wipe the hood from greasy stains in a timely manner.
  2. Sensory. Easy to handle, controlled by touch. The LED lights up momentarily, the device enters the selected mode.
  3. Slider. The desired mode can be selected with a mechanical horizontal switch.
  4. Electronic. Remote control is possible using the remote control.

Hood dimensions

When answering the question of how to choose a hood for the kitchen, it is important to take into account the dimensions of the piece of equipment, correlating them with the area of the room.

The most important principle is that the air purification device must either match the dimensions of the stove, or be larger, but not smaller. Otherwise, not all the dirt will get into the filters, the efficiency of the work will drop significantly. The most common options are models with a width of 50, 60 or 90 centimeters. The depth should be about 30-50 centimeters, the hood should not protrude much above the stove, otherwise you can hit your head on it. The height of the device does not play a particularly important role, it is usually between 1 or 1.5 meters.

Which hood to choose for an electric cooker? Here the height at which the device is mounted above the hob plays a role. The hood can be hung over an electric stove at a distance of 60 centimeters, over a gas stove - at a distance of at least 70 centimeters from the surface. It is unacceptable to reduce this height, since fat that has settled on the walls or on the hood filter can ignite from heat.

Additional "bells and whistles"

In addition to the basic set of functions, the device has room for additional interesting features. We will tell you about the most useful ones, about those that will come in handy in your home:

  1. Remaining stroke. After turning off the device, the fan continues to work quietly for 5-15 minutes. Synchronization with the stove is possible. Thus, the kitchen air will be as clean as possible.
  2. Interval inclusion. Fresh air is constantly supplied to the apartment. The fan runs quietly and the air from the room is discharged outside.
  3. Backlight. LED bulbs, which are equipped with most of the produced hoods, simplify cooking.
  4. Cleaning reminder sensor. On the operating panel, a light comes on, which indicates that it is time to clean or replace the filter.
  5. If you are looking for a unique model for a lot of money, pay attention to the option offered by Siemens. The company has built a TV into the panel.

About the cost of kitchen hoods

There are many models on sale in stores in Moscow and other large cities of Russia. The stores' websites contain their detailed descriptions along with photos and reviews. The most popular hood manufacturers are Bosch, Siemens, Samsung, Zanussi, Gorenje, Hansa.

Hoods are divided by price:

  1. The most economical models are plastic, sometimes metal parts are present. On the panel there are buttons or sliders. Low productivity (up to 500 m3 / h). Lighting - incandescent lamps.
  2. Mid-priced options are aluminum, glass or stainless steel. On the panel there are buttons, sliders, or a sensor. The capacity does not exceed 700 m3 / h. Lighting - incandescent or halogen lamps.
  3. The most expensive models have the highest capacity - up to 1300 m3 / h. The material of manufacture is of high quality, the decoration can be made of valuable wood species. On the panel there is a sensor and many sensors that control temperature, smoke, humidity. Management is carried out using the remote control. Lighting - halogen lamps.
