Budget Kitchen Renovation with a Slate Wall

We have a one-year-old son growing up in our family, so there was no special budget for renovating the kitchen. We decided to do everything on our own, the wife was busy with the arrangement while the baby was resting. Initially, the parental apartment was rented out for a long time, therefore, as such, a kitchen decorated in accordance with all the rules has never been here. We decided to rectify the situation.

Before the renovation, the kitchen looked like this, there is just a set of furniture in the room, there was no question of any style. First of all, we decided to change the environment so that the space was not only practical, but also comfortable. The most important question is financial, it is clear that after the birth of our son, we did not have enough funds to buy a kitchen set. And there are those options that we liked, just astronomically.

Countertops made of artificial material look gloomy and even unnatural, we wanted to use natural materials. Therefore, the choice was stopped on an inexpensive tree. We treated the wood with an impregnation based on flax with wax, which made it possible to use it in such a complex room, endowing it with water-repellent properties.

The room is not large enough, so we abandoned the upper wall cabinets right away. They make the space heavier and look massive. Small shelves with an additionally organized work surface lighting system fit perfectly into the interior.

We had to abandon the LED strip, we did not have the funds for the expensive material, and the cheap strip looks ugly and gives a terrible light. My wife made small lamps using condensed milk jars. They made a great creative decor.

Decorating the work area with an apron is very practical, but on condition that it ends under the upper tier of the cabinets. Since we abandoned hanging cabinets, we had to look for another option for organizing the working wall. The solution was found, we painted the wall with slate paint. At the same time, we got a place for recordings and for the implementation of creative ideas. The surface is water-repellent.

The sink is slightly away from the wall. I hope this will be a convenient and practical solution, since my wife finds that after washing the dishes, the wall is constantly wet with water.

This kitchen never had an extractor hood, but we decided we needed it. Therefore, we organized an outlet for the pipe. The main challenge was to create a channel that would not attract attention. I believe that we have successfully solved this problem.

My wife said that old equipment and a prominent gas meter are too conspicuous against the backdrop of a new renovation. Therefore, I had to put my hands on and correct the situation. We painted the old refrigerator in a nice color, and painted the cover of the gas stove so that it would not stand out against the black background of the wall. And the counter was very successfully disguised as a birdhouse. An interesting idea, it brought an element of play into the setting.

I like the room to be filled with light. Natural light comes only from the window, so for a long time I did not agree to curtain it with a curtain. Although in some ways I agreed with my parents that a decorated window gives more comfort. We agreed that they hung up the roller blind, it can be completely removed during the day, and in the evening, the structure hides the entire opening.

Our repairs took almost four months, but the planned two did not meet. I worked, and my wife could only do work while our baby was sleeping. We tried to buy all materials for a promotion.

Since we did everything ourselves, we hoped to save money, but after calculating the costs, we were surprised. The result was not as budgetary as planned. In total, about 45.0 thousand rubles were spent on the arrangement of the kitchen. Most of the funds were spent on organizing electrical wiring and hoods.

The kitchen is light, cozy and practical. It may seem that the setting is far from the usual representation of this room, but it is pleasant to be and work here. One can feel an unusual atmosphere, a special mood, which is noted by both visiting friends and relatives. We are satisfied!
