Over time, every owner of a gas column has a need to clean it. With proper maintenance and upkeep, the need for cleaning is much less frequent. But even with such care, the heat exchanger will be covered with lime, and soot and soot will settle on the burner.
There are two options: call a specialist to do all the work for you, or clean the gas column yourself. In this article we will analyze how to clean the gas column yourself. The principle of operation of the gas column. A gas water heater is a simple device for heating water for domestic purposes. Depending on the manufacturer and model, components may vary, but the concept is the same:
The heat exchanger is connected to the water supply system. A burner is installed under it, which is connected to a gas pipe. The heat exchanger is filled with water from the system, the burner is turned on, the water is heated. Smoke and other products of gas combustion exit through the chimney. According to the principle of operation, a geyser can be called a kind of kettle.
The latest models of columns are equipped with an automated burner, that is, it does not need to be ignited manually, as it was before. This made the burners more economical and safer. From above, the geyser is covered with a housing / protective casing, into which the control panel is built. With the help of the latter, it is possible to regulate the temperature of water heating and the intensity of gas combustion. There are models with additional adjustable indicators.
Causes of scale formation in the heat exchanger. Scale appears during the use of the column - when water is heated, especially poorly filtered; hard sediment is released, it is deposited inside the heat exchanger, forming a layer of scale, clogging pipes and generally worsening water heating. Nothing can be done about this, you can only regularly clean the gas column.

- The maximum hot water pressure is less than the maximum cold water pressure.
- After opening the tap (hot water), the burner goes out
- The device does not turn on
- The water temperature is lower than before
- Water takes a long time to heat up
Before you start cleaning, make sure that the problem is not in the stopcock. Its breakage can also be the cause of some of these problems.
How to clean the gas column yourself? To do this, it is necessary to dismantle the heat exchanger. To do this, first shut off the gas and water supply to the device.
To avoid problems when dismantling the device, get the instructions. If you lost it, no big deal.
Next you will need the tools:
- Metal collar
- Plastic hose (from 1.5 meters) or a large container
- Paronite gaskets
- Screwdrivers (phillips and straight)
- Adjustable and pipe wrenches
First you need to drain the water from the heat exchanger. To do this, connect the prepared hose to the heat exchanger and open the water supply. The next step is to remove the frame/column casing. Be careful not to damage the control panel when removing it. The cleaning filter is fixed with a nut, it must be removed with an adjustable wrench / wrench. After that, it must be washed and dried. If the filter is damaged, replace it. Disconnect the device from the pipes, remove the heat exchanger and remove it from the hinges. During the operation of the gas column, various substances and elements are deposited in the heat exchanger. Getting some of them on the floor, arm, leg or other part of the body will cause negative consequences, so put the device in a container (preferably with detergent) so that the substances settle and drain.
And now the main stage of cleaning. You will need a cleaner or a solution. Someone advises using sodas (Sprite or Pepsi), but this method has not been proven effective, so it's better use classic products - Antinakipin, household vinegar (9%) or citric acid (100 grams per liter water).
In no case do not use its essence instead of household vinegar. These are different substances. The essence is highly acidic - it will corrode copper pipes.
Turn the heat exchanger upside down and pour 0.5-1 liter of cleaner into it. Shake the device and leave for 15 minutes. If you use a specialized detergent, follow its instructions. Drain the solution, on the one hand, connect a hose to the heat exchanger, and on the other, connect it to the water supply pipe. Open the pipe valve and flush the heat exchanger from the inside. Run water until clean water comes out. To be safe, do a few of these washes.
The geyser has been flushed. It remains only to collect it back:
- Connect the heat exchanger to the water supply, treat all connections with grease, replace the gaskets.
- Install a water filter.
- Put on the frame/cover.
- Connect the device to the water and gas pipes.
- Open the faucets.
- Check the quality of the connections.
- Carry out a test run of the geyser.
