On a cold autumn day, when it’s still far from turning on the central heating, I want warmth and comfort. One of the most modern heating devices that can save a family budget and create a comfortable indoor environment is a quartz heater for the house. In this article we will describe what these heating devices are, and also talk about the advantages and disadvantages of this technique.

Not so long ago no one had any idea that there are such methods of heating a room. Today it is one of the most popular and safe appliances for heating an apartment or a private house.

First of all, it should be understood that the concept of "quartz heater" is suitable for two types of devices. They are so different in appearance and method of heat transfer, the only thing that unites them is quartz or ordinary sand. This element is present in the device of one and another model.

So, all models of quartz heaters can be divided into 2 large groups:

  1. Infrared. The main working unit of such devices is a small heating element. It is placed in a special sealed tube of quartz glass. All other structural elements are designed to focus and distribute the infrared radiation generated by the heater.
  2. Convection .They represent a monolithic slab of quartz sand, in the body of which a special heating element is placed.

Monolithic quartz heaters

The principle of operation of such a heating device resembles a rural stove familiar to Russian people. The fire very quickly heats the thick walls, which cool down for several hours and delight the household with its warmth. Monolithic heaters are arranged around the same principle.

Device of convection quartz heaters

Open fire here, of course, excluded. Instead of a furnace firebox, there is one or several nichrome spirals enclosed in a thick monolithic case. The whole structure weighs about 12 kg. Such a device is not supposed to be carried from place to place. It must be installed indoors permanently. If the ceiling height does not exceed three meters, then one such heater is sufficient for heating a room with an area of 15–18 m2.

The process of making monolithic heaters is quite simple. Spiral wire, made of an alloy of chromium and nickel, is equipped with all the necessary fasteners and zigzag fit into a special form. After that, a solution made of quartz sand is also placed there.

The billet is pressed and dried, after which it is baked in an oven at a high temperature. This gives the quartz solution a special density. Since the production process eliminates the access of air to the spiral, it almost never burns out. All fasteners and connections to the power supply cable are also carefully insulated. This is a good short circuit protection. So the use of monolithic structures is completely safe.

In order to simplify and cheapen the design even more, many manufacturers do not bother to introduce various switches or thermostat into the design. The device is turned on and off by simply “plugging” the plug into the outlet.

Advantages of monolithic heating devices

With all the simplicity and simplicity of design, monolithic quartz heaters have a lot of advantages:

  • Absolute fire safety. Since the heating element is safely hidden in quartz, its interaction with the environment is reduced to zero. Therefore, a fire is unlikely.
  • Sustainability. The solution for the manufacture of structures made of ordinary sand. It is completely safe for people, animals and plants present in the house.
  • Noiseless operation.
  • Attractive appearance. Many manufacturers stylize heaters under a decorative stone or Venetian plaster. Small thickness allows you to install the device on any wall.
  • No unpleasant odors. In this case, the option is eliminated when particles of dust fall on a hot spiral. Therefore, you will not feel any unpleasant smell during work.
  • Reliability and durability. Since the device has a minimum of structural elements, this item is beyond doubt.
  • Immunity to moisture. Such a device can be installed not only in the bedroom or living room. Due to the fact that all the elements are safely hidden inside the quartz block, the heater can be hung in the bathroom or the dressing room.
  • Does not burn oxygen. Due to the fact that the spiral does not directly contact with the air, the level of oxygen in the room will not change. The user will not have a feeling of "overdressed" air.
  • Excellent heat capacity. One of the properties of quartz sand is its rapid heating. Thus, having warmed up in 15–20 minutes, the monolithic plate will release the received heat for 1–1.5 hours in the form of infrared radiation.
  • Easy installation. You will not need any special knowledge. Just fix on the wall special brackets that are included.
  • Affordable price. The cost of most models rarely exceeds 4 thousand rubles.

Disadvantages of the “monolith”

Unfortunately, nothing ideal exists in nature. This statement applies to monolithic quartz heaters.

One of the most significant drawbacks in this case is that the surface of the "monolith" is heated to a temperature of 100-120 degrees. If you inadvertently touch it, you risk getting burned. This is especially worth considering for those who have small children in the family. When installing such a heater, take care to equip it with a protective screen.

Another negative point is the impressive weight of the product. It is especially important to take into account this moment during installation. If you want to install a panel weighing 13–13 kg on an interior plasterboard partition, this is unlikely to work for you.

As already mentioned, many models cannot boast of a temperature control system, so you will have to do it manually with the help of a banal “pulling” out of the socket.

If you come across a model that eventually began to crumble and crack, most likely it’s not about the heater itself. You just "lucky" to run into an unscrupulous manufacturer who replaced the quartz sand with gypsum or did not comply with the manufacturing technology.

Infrared quartz heaters

Now let's take a closer look at another type of energy-saving heating device for the garden or apartment. IR heaters are fundamentally different principle of operation. While any other heating devices heat the surrounding air, infrared heaters warm objects: walls, sofas, wardrobes, chairs, and, of course, people's bodies. This principle of work is very similar to the "work" of the sun, whose rays warm a person well even on a windy day.

The device of the home "sun"

Here everything is arranged a little more complicated than that of monolithic quartz heaters.

The heating element is also a wire helix made of carbon or an alloy of nickel and chromium. It is placed inside a hollow quartz tube, from which air is subsequently evacuated. Such elements can be one or several. It depends on the power of the device. Depending on the type and design of the device, vacuum tubes can be replaced with customary heating elements made of anodized aluminum or special plate heaters.

A reflector-reflector is placed behind the tubes. It can be made of both glass and polished metal plate, which is preferable.

This whole structure is placed in a special case, the front part of which is covered with a protective grid. The fact is that the “working” temperatures here are very high, and you can get burned.

There are many types of infrared heaters. You can purchase a model that is attached to the ceiling and takes up minimal space. There are also wall and portable models on sale. The latter are very interesting because you are free to put them exactly where it is needed at the moment. Such a heater can be carried out on the open terrace and it will perfectly warm the whole family for an evening tea party in the open air.

On sale you can also find portable devices that can operate not from electricity, but from a small gas cylinder. This heater is convenient to take with you on a hike, on a fishing trip or into the woods for an autumn picnic.

Advantages of infrared devices

  • Almost instantaneous heating. Since the device heats objects, not air, you will receive the result of its work immediately after switching on.
  • Compact. The heater does not take up much space and is easy to fit in the trunk of the car. Particularly compact travel models fit even into a small bag.
  • Limited Job. If the living room at your cottage is quite large, you do not need to warm it all up. Create for yourself a comfortable zone in the area of a sofa or table, and the whole room will warm up later on its own.
  • Not afraid of drafts. This heater works great on terraces, summer playgrounds or gazebos. Since it does not heat the air, then nothing can "heat" away heat.
  • Silent operation.
  • Excellent efficiency. The efficiency of the IR device can reach 97%.However, this applies to almost all modern heating devices.
  • Convenient management. Many manufacturers equip their models with temperature controls and remote controls. This is especially for ceiling models.

Cons of infrared heaters

  • Not too high security. To install such devices is only where they can not get small children. After all, the surface temperature of the infrared heater is so high that a burn can be obtained very quickly.
  • Quartz tubes are quite fragile. So they must be handled with care. If one of them cracks, it will be impossible to repair, you have to replace it entirely.
  • The heated coils glow quite brightly. This can be annoying to some people, especially at night.

What to prefer?

So how to choose a quartz heater? What to prefer: monolith or infrared?

It all depends on the purpose for which the device will be used. If you are planning to make permanent heating in a private house or in the country, monolithic panels are the best fit. They are not afraid of dampness, durable and economical. If you spend a little more money and buy a thermostat, you can keep the heater on for a long time. It will be enough to set the minimum comfortable temperature and you can go about your business. By the next arrival the cottage will meet you with warmth and comfort.

If we are talking about establishing a comfortable temperature in an open area, a terrace, or just a very large area, it is better to give preference to quartz IR heaters. Do not trust them "main" heating. As long as the infrared heater fully warms up a large room, you are already done with your business, and you no longer need heat.

Monolithic panels are most advantageous to use as an additional source of heat. For example, you can heat the boiler, and then maintain the desired temperature with the help of quartz monolith.

No matter what type of heater you prefer, it is very important to correctly calculate the power of the device. This will help the relevant experts. Do not believe television advertising, which promises that the device with a power of 0.5 kW will quickly warm up the room when it is cold — 10 ° C and lower.

Also, pay attention to the country of origin. Among foreign companies, the best recommendations were received by the Swedes( UFO) and the Germans( FAKIR).Domestic manufacturers, producing mainly monolithic models: "HeatPlit", "TeplEko" and some others. But the Chinese in the production of quartz heaters should not be trusted. According to user feedback, these models are very short-lived and often fail. But to find parts for repair is a real problem.
