Why orchid leaves lose turgor and what to do

Contents of the article:

Beautiful orchids require a little more attention than other flowers. First of all it concerns the creation of suitable growing conditions and the provision of proper care for them. If you do not adhere to the recommendations, the plants can get sick and die, because they are very sensitive, especially with regard to watering.

One of the most common problems that arise among orhomans is leaf wilting. A healthy orchid has a firm, resilient leaf plate of saturated green color, filled with moisture. And if the leaves of the flower become lethargic and soft, like dangles hanging down, it means that it is necessary to urgently take care of its resuscitation.

Causes of loss of turgor with orchid

In most cases, orchid leaves become soft and acquire a characteristic structure( covered with deep wrinkles) as a result of loss of moisture. But the cause of this problem may be various factors. If only one or a few lower leaves wither, but the others have a good turgor, this is a completely natural process, so the orchid sheds old leaves.

In case of wilting of all leaves, the cause of turgor loss can be:

  • excessive drying of the soil( if watering is skipped);
  • root decay;
  • excess fertilizer;
  • temperature too high;
  • cramped pot.

With a natural die-off with an orchid, you do not need to do anything, until the leaf dries out, it is still able to nourish the plant. Over time, the sheet itself will turn yellow and dry, but then it can already be removed.

How to restore leaf turgor?

A drooping orchid that has long been left without watering in dry bark should be well shed and the air humidity should be increased. To do this, spray leaves regularly.

If the watering was done in a timely manner, the substrate did not dry up, but the leaves are still sluggish, which means that the orchid cannot deliver moisture to them due to loss of roots. The rotting of the root system in turn provokes abundant and frequent watering.

In this case, remove the plant from the pot, remove the rotten, soft roots and transplant to a fresh substrate. If the root is rotten only from the edge, but it has a healthy start, it is necessary to cut only the damaged part before the appearance of healthy tissue at the site of the cut. It is not necessary to cut it off completely, because it is still able to feed the orchid.

Periodically, it is necessary to repot the flower, because in a close pot the roots begin to crawl out and are no longer able to fully provide the plant with moisture.

We should also mention the role of the summer period in the development of orchids. The optimum temperature for flowers is 25 degrees Celsius. In the summer, it often exceeds the specified norms, especially if the pot is standing on the window near the glass, and as a result of overheating the leaves fade. It is urgently necessary to rearrange the orchid in a cooler place and spray it.
