Vinyl wallpaper is one of the main types of coatings that is suitable for wall decoration onthe kitchen.

Pros: durability( 10-15 years), moisture resistance, in washable types - water-repellent properties, strength, resistance to fading and fading, the ability to hide the unevenness of the walls and “tolerate” their movements, the ability to sound insulation( in non-woven wallpaper).

Cons: artificiality, unpleasant smell( in some types of wallpaper), the release of harmful volatile substances( in small doses), poor breathability( in some species), which can contribute to the formation of fungi and mold on the surface of the walls.

Step 1. First, select the base - which is better paper or non-woven?

Vinyl wallpaper, as a rule, consists of two layers - from the base, which can be paper or non-woven, as well as from the top decorative protective layer of polyvinyl chloride( PVC), which is embossed or patterned.

Advice for those who do not want to delve into the nuances of the differences between all types of wallpaper:

  • The best wallpaper for the kitchen - solid washable vinyl wallpaper on non-woven base. They are better tolerated by frequent washing, abrasion, temperature changes, high humidity, do not fade, soundproof and due to greater density well hide small flaws in the wall. And most importantly - they "breathe", which means that there is no mold under them and they do not emit harmful volatile substances. Theoretically, such wallpaper can last for 15 years without much change. In addition, they are easier to glue, because they do not stretch from the glue, which, moreover, is applied not to the wallpaper, but only on the wall.

Step 2. Now select the type of vinyl layer.

The top layer of vinyl wallpaper, that is, the actual vinyl, is also different. All types of vinyl coatings can be divided into 3 large groups:

  1. foamed vinyl: structured wallpaper with decorative embossing and for painting;

  1. flat vinyl, hot stamping vinyl - this group includes the so-called "Super Wash", silk-screen printing and compact vinyl;
  1. solid vinyl.

And now let's talk about the applicability of these types specifically to the kitchen.

  1. Foamed vinyl-based paper coatings have a rough but soft surface.

You can choose:

  • foamed vinyl with decorative embossing( under linen, mat, textured leather, etc.);

  • vinyl for painting, that is, white or beige wallpaper that can be repainted up to 10 times.

They are not distinguished by high strength and moisture resistance, but still they can be cleaned with a damp cloth without strong friction and abrasives, therefore they are suitable for the kitchen to some degree. And most importantly, they are harmless, as the foamed vinyl coating has a porous structure that allows the wall to "breathe."Another plus of them - due to their relief, they make wall irregularities barely noticeable.

  1. Let's go to flat vinyl.
  • The best wallpaper for the kitchen in terms of durability and ease of maintenance is super-washable( “Super Cleaner”), with increased moisture resistance and an increased thickness of the PVC protective layer, due to which they look a little rough. In addition, the number of designs in this group is limited;

  • Compact vinyl is also often chosen for the kitchen. They are durable and easy to maintain, because they are not afraid of water and cleaning. Can imitate textiles, plaster, natural stone;
  • Silk-screen printing, paper-based coating, imitating smooth silk with deep embossing. They are considered not very durable, so they should be glued in canteens. In addition, they can not hide the small flaws of the wall.

  1. Finally, hard vinyl is a heat-treated, that is, evaporated PVC coating from which all harmful substances are removed.

As we have said, these are the best wallpapers for the kitchen, as they have all the advantages of washable vinyl wallpapers, but they “breathe”, and because of the smooth surface they are very easy to wipe. But the price is higher.

An important departure from the topic - vinyl wallpapers - breathe or not breathe?

Vinyl wallpaper is often blamed for the fact that they "do not breathe."And this, unfortunately, is true, since vinyl has no pores that could provide for the processes of air exchange, accumulation and evaporation of excess moisture in the room. However, this disadvantage is completely solved - frequent airing, as well as the use of glue and primer with an antiseptic.

But it is best to buy the same solid vinyl wallpaper, which has a base of a special non-woven material or a three-layer paper, which has a microcapillary structure.

Step 3. Calculate the material consumption

To calculate, you need to calculate the perimeter of the kitchen according to the formula: length of one wall + length of the adjacent wall x 2. For example, if the length of one wall is 5 meters, the other - 3 meters, the perimeter will be 16 meters.

If the length of the opposite walls is different( there are niches and protrusions), then the perimeter is considered differently:

  1. is calculated the length of each wall( taking into account the grooves and convex parts).
  2. all indicators are added up - the result is the perimeter.
  • There is no need to “subtract” windows and doors, let the excess remain prozapas.

Next, do the calculation of material consumption. To do this:

  1. Determine the required number of paintings. For this, the perimeter of the room should be divided by the roll width( the standard roll width is 53 cm, but it is better to clarify by looking at the size on the package).We round it up in a big way and, thus, we understand the number of canvases necessary for pasting the kitchen. If we divide our perimeter( 16 meters) by the standard roll width( 53 cm), then, when rounded, we get 31 webs( 1600/53 = 30.2).
  • To determine the height of the canvas, we use this technique: take the height of the kitchen( for example, 2.50 m), add “rapport”( rapport is the step with which the pattern is repeated on the wallpaper, it is indicated on the packaging if the wallpaper has a pattern) + stockon top and bottom cropping( 10 cm).We count: height - 2.50 m + 50 cm “rapport” + 10 cm for trimming = 3.10 - the height of the web.
  1. Determine how many canvases in a roll. To do this, you need to divide the roll length by the height of one web. The standard length is slightly more than 10 m( 10 m and 5 cm).We have already calculated the height in the previous paragraph. We count: if the roll length is 10 m, and the web height is 3.10 m, then there are only 3 blades in one roll. The remaining centimeters - trimming.
  2. Determine the required number of rolls. For this you need the resulting number from the first item( 31 in our case) divided by the resulting number from the second item( 3 rolls) + 1 take a roll to the stock. We get:( kitchen perimeter - 31 m) / 3( canvases in a roll) + 1 = 12 rolls( after rounding).

In total, in our case, for pasting the entire kitchen, you need to buy 12 rolls. Make a similar calculation and get your number of required materials.

Step 4. We buy glue for vinyl wallpaper

Gluing vinyl wallpaper requires a special approach - in particular, in terms of preparing the adhesive mixture. The choice of adhesive for vinyl wallpapers depends on their type:

  • universal adhesives are suitable only for light vinyl wallpapers;
  • also has universal adhesives for all types of paper-based vinyl wallpaper;
  • adhesives for non-woven base vinyl wallpaper.

As for the kitchen they choose washable, dense and heavy vinyl wallpaper, the glue must correspond and be marked with the signature - “for heavy wallpapers”.

Tips for choosing glue for gluing vinyl wallpaper:

  • For wallpaper for a long time not peeling off and easily gluing, get glue from a trusted manufacturer, which does not contain starch or impurities like PVA, which makes it difficult for the glue to dissolve in water.
  • A good glue should completely dissolve in no more than 5 minutes without forming lumps.
  • The finished glue must be of a gel-like consistency so that when applied it is not sprayed with a brush and easily applied to the canvas.
  • Glue for vinyl wallpaper for finishing the kitchen should be moisture-resistant, this is especially important for pasting wallpaper for painting. Moisture-resistant adhesives can transfer 6−8 cycles of repainting the coating.
  • It is best to buy glue with a color indicator in the composition, which eliminates the occurrence of non-glued places, which is especially important for vinyl wallpaper on non-woven fabric, when the glue is applied directly to the wall.
  • Also, glue for vinyl wallpaper should have antiseptic additives( fungicides) to prevent mold from appearing under non-breathing wallpaper.

Step 5. Preparing the wall and everything you need

Before you glue vinyl wallpaper, you do not need to bring the wall surface to a perfect condition, as they are dense and will be able to block small cracks. And yet, some requirements must be met.

  • Before sticking the wall should be smooth, clean and dry, without greasy stains, nails, remnants of old wallpaper and paint.
  • Surfaces must also be primed with a special compound.
  • Before you glue vinyl wallpaper, you need to test the readiness of the walls for pasting. To do this, swipe over the surface with your hand - it should remain without chalk and putty particles. In addition, a piece of film can be glued to the wall with adhesive tape( without gaps around the perimeter) and left for a day. If there is no condensation under the film the next day, then the surface is considered finished.

For work, prepare also:

And do not forget to prepare a clean workplace for cutting and promazyvany cloths, as well as find a partner. After all, one with such a job can not cope.

Step 6. We glue the wallpaper like a pro

And now let's find out how to glue vinyl wallpaper. The process is quite simple and does not differ from pasting other types of wallpaper.

  1. First you need to do the cutting: measure the height of the wall, and then cut the roll into strips of the desired length +10 cm allowance. If there is a drawing on the material that requires combining, then it is picked up before sticking - that is why these wallpapers are always taken with a margin;
  2. After cutting the glue is applied: if the base is non-woven, then glue is applied only on the wall, and if paper, then on the canvas, and on the wall( sometimes only on the canvas).

Tip: if you have glue without a color indicator, you can evenly distribute the glue by bending the smeared strip in half as shown in the photo below and letting it get wet.

  1. Before you glue vinyl wallpaper, you need to draw the markup using a building level or plumb.
  1. Wallpaper is always glued from window to door. Glue them to butt, tightly fitting each other.
  1. After gluing, the web is straightened with a special rubber roller, as if drawing a Christmas tree: first we roll the roller along the wallpaper along the center, and then from the center to the edges. Especially carefully straighten the canvas under the ceiling plinth. Strongly rub or press on wet cloths it is impossible, especially if they on a paper substrate.
  2. After all the strips are glued, it will only be necessary to trim the edges at the level of the baseboard mounting with a sharp knife. If the plinth is not removed, then the wallpaper is bent inward and well-ironed.

With regard to sticking in the corners and behind the batteries, here are the recommendations:

  1. In the corners of the canvas are glued to the next wall and carefully smoothed. The strip is pasted on top along the preliminary vertical marking.
  2. 10 cm of cloths are wound up behind the radiators and carefully pressed with a roller.
