Sinningia, beautiful, better known to growers as Gloxinia, has enjoyed high attention for several decades.m lovers of indoor plants. What are so attractive gloxinia, photos and names of varieties which are more than ever?
For many gardeners, the love for this culture began in childhood with the large velvet bells gone on the grandmother’s windowsill. In those days, it was almost impossible to find a gloxinia other than a thick violet or crimson color. Today, breeders received hundreds of amazing beauty, variety of forms and colors of plants ready to grow and flourish in room conditions.
It is unlikely that our grandmothers suspected that it would take more than one hour to study the photos and names of Gloxinia varieties. In the collections of current fans of this flower appeared:
- white and pink, purple and red varieties;
- varieties with polka dot flowers;
- plants with bells decorated on the edge with a bright contrasting border.
For ease of classification, flower growers have introduced the division of gloxinia according to the size of the bush and the characteristics of the rims.
Classification of varieties of gloxinia
Depending on the size of the aerial part of the plant and the rosette formed, hybrid gloxinia are divided into miniatures that do not grow more than 20 cm and standard plants whose leaf rosettes can exceed 30 cm. There are also a number of varieties occupying an intermediate position in thisclassification.
Corollas of modern plants may consist of one or several rows of petals. Terry gloxinia is incredibly popular, because their bell-shaped flowers are more luxuriant than simple ones, and in form they most resemble camellia or garden roses.
According to the type of dying gloxinia modern varieties are divided into monochromatic, calico and tiger.
- Monophonic flowers are evenly colored in different tones from white, light pink or lilac to purple and deep purple. Only a spot in the depth of the neck can be lighter or white.
- Corinths with calico type are covered with one-dimensional spots or specks.
- Tigris are decorated not only with elegant peas, but also with a border around the edge of the petals.
When you see the inscription Gloxinia “Tigrin Red”, Blue or White on the package with a tuber, you can be sure that the manufacturer offers to grow a flower with an original corolla of a rich red or purple shade. However, to get the same plant from the seeds will not work, because hybrids multiply only vegetatively.
In some varieties of gloxinia flowers have the form not of the usual bell, but the seeds, that is, the shoe that is more common in other plants belonging to Hesneria.
Gloxinia loves the bright, but not direct rays of the sun, is afraid of drafts and extreme temperatures, and responds very negatively to excessive watering. Gloxinia may seem very whimsical. But those who master plant care will not regret it. With due attention, from spring to autumn the green pet blooms regularly.
By the fall, the number of buds decreases, and then the aboveground part of the gloxinia fades. The plant begins a period of rest, during which life is maintained only in the tuber.
At home, the gloxinia plant can be obtained from a spring-planted tuber or from seeds. You can propagate your favorite variety by rooting a healthy leaf. Due to this, many species today have become more accessible than before.
Both foreign and Russian enthusiasts are engaged in the Gloxinia breeding. Industrial varieties offered by amateur growers by large flower companies in the Netherlands and other countries are widely known. In their assortment are simple and terry gloxinia, conditionally combined into groups according to the shape of flowers, sizes of corolla and rosettes.
Avante Gloxinia Variety Group, Avanti
A good example would be Gloxinia Avante or Avanti. This group of varieties includes many color options. Most often, gloxinia of this variety are offered as seed sets for independent cultivation. Grown up plants have a compact sheet rosette, against which simple velvety flowers seem even larger and more effective.
The most common hybrids of Avanti include gloxinia:
- purple Avanti Light Violet;
- richly blooming white, with wavy edges Avanti White;
- with light purple or bluish flowers, decorated with a wide white wavy border Avanti Blue with White Edge, or Blue Lace;
- Scarlet, with velvety wine-red flowers Avanti Scarlet.

Gloxinia Kaiser Friedrich
A bright crimson halo with a white border and a small bright spot in the depth of the neck are characteristic features of the Kaiser Friedrich gloxinia depicted in the photo. The outer side of the spectacular bell is painted white, the petals on the edge resemble a cute shuttlecock. To achieve mass flowering for this ort requires attentive care, support for nutritional value and moderate soil moisture.
Gloxinia Blanche de Meru
The Gloxinia Blanche de Meru pictured in the photo can be easily recognized by its large flowers with crimson petals and white pharynx. The leaf rosette of the plant in diameter reaches 25 cm, while good care helps to maintain not only velvety large leaves, but also stimulates a long, lush flowering from late spring to early autumn.
If gloxinia falls under direct sunlight, both velvety leaves and flowers may suffer. They become smaller, drop-down buds are paler colored and fade faster.
Gloxinia Violacea
Gloxinia Violacea can be called a classic flower. The variety is characterized by simple purple flowers with a white, speckled throat and the wavy edges of the petals. The gloxinia plant Violacea has standard sizes, the rims in full dissolution have a diameter of about 8 cm.
