A fitting is a small but irreplaceable part when you need to install plumbing or heating. To connect the pipe pieces, make the transition from one diameter to another, bypass a corner or an obstacle, and these invaluable helpers of any plumber are needed. Based on the tasks, fittings come in different shapes, single, double and triple. The latter are called adapters and splitters. You can get to know the fittings better by looking under a home sink or sink.
Types of Fittings
All fittings are conditionally divided into two groups: according to the place of use and the method of attachment. The first serve both for connecting devices to the water supply system, and for connecting pipes to each other.
According to the method of fastening, fittings are divided into:
- Metal-plastic - connect pipes from this material;
- Threaded - their internal thread, and the part itself is screwed onto the pipe. Such connections can be unwound repeatedly;
- Glue - the connection provides a reliable glue;
- Self-locking - this connection is easy to fix and remove with a special key;
- Capillary soldering - there is a thin wire under the internal thread of the fitting. The fitting is put on the pipe and heated, after which the wire melts and fixes the fitting on the pipe;
- Compression - well fasten pipes, heterogeneous in diameter and material. They are used for water supply under high pressure;
- Press fittings - they are especially durable, but they cannot be mounted without a special tool. They connect plastic pipes well. The connection is done once, it is no longer disassembled and twisted.
Each material has its own type of fittings, therefore, depending on the type of pipe, the connection is also selected.
In addition, there are many more varieties of fittings, the names of which have been heard by everyone: squeegee, fitting, coupling, barrel, corner, crosspiece, tee, plug. They differ among themselves, first of all, in form.
Correct material calculation
It is better to entrust the installation of a water supply system to a professional plumber, but having some tools and a little knowledge in this area, it is not difficult to assemble a metal-plastic water supply system yourself.
As a rule, difficulties for beginners are caused by the calculation of the necessary details and elements. If the length of the pipes can be found by measuring the perimeter of the rooms, then with fittings, due to their diversity, confusion is obtained. Which ones to buy and how much? How not to buy extra and unnecessary parts?
These questions can be answered if you draw a detailed diagram of the water supply on a piece of paper. On it you need to specify all the angles, turns, possible joints of pipes, points of connection to plumbing fixtures and transitions from pipes of one diameter to another, if any. Then, the number of fittings of each type is calculated and written out. With these calculations already go to the store. Sales consultants will help you there.
But it is worth remembering that in the process of working with parts, some connections can be damaged. Therefore, you must take at least one extra fitting for every five pieces of the same type. Fittings for plastic pipes are inexpensive, but you don’t have to run to the store every time to buy the missing part.
