How to drill a hole in glass without a special tool

Sometimes it becomes necessary to drill a hole in the glass. Having mastered this operation, you can make beautiful, airy products to the delight of family.

So, you need to decide on the tool to be used. First of all, this is a drill of the right diameter with diamond coating. If the hole is large in diameter, you will have to purchase a diamond crown. There are other drills and crowns, but this option is most suitable for drilling glass at home. The price in stores does not go off scale.

Next, an adjustable speed drill. If you have a small drilling machine at home, then this is ideal because you need to drill at right angles. But a good master will cope with a drill. As an additional option, this is the use of a screwdriver. Its low revolutions contribute to high-quality drilling. The main thing is patience.

Training

Degrease the glass surface with alcohol or acetone and wipe dry. Lay the sheet on a perfectly smooth surface. To exclude vibration, lay a cardboard or thick cloth. Provide immobility during drilling. We must not forget that the size of the sheet should be smaller than the surface to prevent sagging. This is fraught with damage to the glass. If drilling is done for the first time, then it is better to practice on glass scraps, to “fill your hand”.

Drilling

As mentioned above, you need to drill strictly at right angles, excluding the inclinations and runout of the drill. The procedure is carried out without pressure on the drill, in several passes. It is advisable to use clay as a side to hold water. Heated not only glass, but also the drill.

When the tip of the drill comes out on the other side of the sheet, it must be turned over and drilled from the back. This will provide the least amount of small chips. Upon completion, the roughness can be treated with fine-grained sandpaper.

A few tips:

• To avoid cracks and large chips, it is necessary to apply a little honey or turpentine to the drilled area;
• If possible, it is better to drill with a screwdriver. Its low speed will help not to make mistakes;
• Take short breaks every 5-7 minutes. This eliminates overheating of the glass and the tool;
• During the break, replace the water inside the plasticine rim;
• And most importantly: do not put pressure on the drill / driver while drilling.
