More recently, all water supply systems were fully equipped with pipes made of various types of metal or their alloys. The introduction of metal-plastic and plastic analogues forced to press such common types of pipes as steel and cast-iron. And even the new items could not stay long at the peak of popularity. The ordinary plastic was replaced by a pipe made of low pressure polyethylene (HDPE), which has higher performance. Unlike metal pipes, plastic is characterized by:
- Low price;
- Light weight;
- Resistance to corrosion;
- Long service life;
- Lack of need for isolation;
- Ease of assembly;
- The impossibility of molecular interaction with water;
- The elasticity of the material;
The scope of plastic pipes is as wide as that of metal ones. They can connect both sewage and water supply.
The high level of chemical resistance and resistance to corrosion allows the transport of liquid through plastic pipes, the temperature of which reaches 75 degrees Celsius.
Metal pipes are prone to rapid failure due to the past period of their operation or the impact of destructive factors. Plastic analogues are designed for a period of operation of at least 50 years, and the period of use of special models for heating declared by manufacturers reaches 80 years.
The types of plastic used for the production of pipes differ in their quality characteristics and cost. Polypropylene products are especially popular because of the affordable price and reliability. This material perfectly tolerates not only high temperatures, but also high pressure.
Cross-linked polyethylene is more expensive, but able to withstand a pressure that is a multiple of 40 atmospheres. Plastic pipes are often coated with additional protective material, such as fiberglass or aluminum foil. This provides its higher strength.
Metal pipes, although able to establish themselves as reliable and high-quality systems, they nevertheless largely lose to modern plastic products. The tendency of metal to corrosion, the complexity of installation and repair work contribute to the fact that every year an increasing number of people and organizations make a choice in favor of plastic. The quality of such pipes is significantly higher, and the long-term functioning is more than a dozen years.
