Spanbond is a completely new type of geotextile, which began to be used for upholstery as a duplicate and protective material recently. Below we will consider in more detail all its pros and cons.
Spunbond is a technical material that is produced by melting a polymer and drawing its thin threads through special dies. The latter, in turn, are interwoven into the canvas. In addition to the furniture industry, spanbond is used in many other areas. For example, floor coverings and even a film are made from it to protect plants from frost.
The scope depends on the method of fastening the threads. In the manufacture of spunbond for the furniture industry, the widely known polypropylene is most often used. Threads can be joined in several ways:
- Water-jet bonding;
- Conventional thermal bonding;
- Thermal bonding with air;
- Chemical impregnation;
- Needle piercing.
The most common connection methods at the moment can be called thermal bonding and needle piercing. In the furniture industry, spunboards are most often used as an alternative to calico and burlap when upholstering the back walls of sofas and armchairs. The use of this material in this capacity is advisable due mainly to its unusual strength.
Often spanbond is also used as a layer between the filler and the upper furniture upholstery. Due to this quality, this material is sometimes used for wrapping spring blocks in order to distribute the load between them as evenly as possible.
Here, in addition to its strength, such advantages of a spunbond as hygroscopicity, resistance to creasing and abrasion, and the ability to "breathe" play an important role. In addition, this material is easy to stain and non-toxic.
Another plus is low electrical conductivity. When used in the furniture industry, this indicator can be quite significant advantage.
Protective covers for pillows and mattresses are also often made from it. At the same time, they are removable, which allows them to be dry cleaned and washed. In addition, spanbond does not burn, is not affected by microorganisms and is considered an environmentally friendly material.
As you can see, this geotextile has practically no drawbacks. The only thing that can be attributed to minor indirect flaws is that it is still not a natural material.
