The opinion that asbestos dust from old slate is capable of causing significant damage to the human respiratory system has recently been gaining more and more popularity. Opponents of this theory are actively proving the opposite, arguing that the topic is being forced by manufacturers of alternative roofing materials. Consider all the points of this issue, determining which of the parties to the law.

The composition of the classic slate made of asbestos cement includes the presence of water, cement and asbestos fiber. The last component added during the production process is of two types of fibers: amphibole and chrysotile. The first type is a source of the release of harmful compounds not only in the process of use, but also in new products. It is this fact that laid the foundation for the ban on the production and use of slate in European countries.

Most domestic manufacturers use chrysotol fibers in their production, which are positioned as non-harmful.
Old slate
After many years, the slate, like any other object, is naturally destroyed. This process is especially active after 15 years of operation. Due to the regular exposure to aggressive environmental factors, the surface becomes less hardy and begins to break down. Cracks in the coating of asbestos fiber contribute to the formation of a transparent cloud, which can adversely affect the respiratory system of the human body. They are eliminated solely by replacing old or damaged sheets.

Current sanitary standards prescribe the mandatory removal from the premises of all elements that contain asbestos. That is why it is recommended not to cut or break the slate plates, and before working with this material, wet it with water or special substances.

Old dismantled sheets for the previously described reason should not be used for other domestic purposes. Some people find them used in the form of fences, walkways and other supporting material. Damaged or old slate sheets must be disposed of.

Having considered the question of the dangers of slate, we can conclude that everything is very ambiguous. A new sheet, if it is made without the use of amphibole fibers, does not pose a threat to human life and health. However, damaged, cut, or old material is not so safe. Naturally, a complete replacement of the slate coating can significantly hit the owner’s pocket. It is important to remember that this price is not only the cost of the material, but also the payment for preserved health.
