Many newcomers to the construction industry make the critical mistake of replacing plaster with putty. It should be said right away that these materials, despite some similar qualities, are different in composition and properties.
Using plaster, you can get rid of large irregularities on the wall, smooth the coating. Putty is suitable for eliminating small defects on the surfaces of walls and filling cracks and chips. In its composition, unlike plaster, there are no large fractions, and therefore its use for large-scale alignment of walls or ceilings is impractical.
A significant difference between the compositions lies in the fact that the plaster is the material used as an intermediate layer, and the putty is the topcoat. Thus, the answer to the question - is it possible to replace the plaster with putty, is negative.
Types of plaster
The mortar for leveling the walls is divided into three main types.
It:
- Calcareous;
- Cement;
- Gypsum
The first type is characterized by elasticity and ease of application. Its only drawback is the inability to create a strong and durable coating. Therefore, despite the environmental friendliness and affordable cost, the material is not in special demand in the market.
The second type provides high-quality coating and can be used when conducting external and internal facing works. Suitable for processing almost any surface, because it has good adhesion.
Gypsum plaster is used exclusively for interior work. It has plasticity, due to which it is easily applied to the surface of walls. This indicator allows you to reduce the time of preparatory work.
A separate view is to highlight decorative plaster. It is used as an independent facing material and does not require additional coating with putty.
Types of putty
Facing mixture may be:
- Gypsum;
- Acrylic
- Latex;
- Polymer.
Gypsum putty can be destructive to moisture and mechanical damage, and therefore it is recommended to use it in the process of interior decoration.
The polymer mixture is composed of latex or acrylic, and therefore is characterized by ease of application and durability. For this reason, it is used more often than other types of material.
