Variants of ceiling sockets
Ceiling outlet is a monolithic or fixed to the substrate prefabricated structure, which closes the unsightly place of fixing the chandelier to the surface and the junction points of the electrical leads to it wires.
The concept of "socket" is borrowed from the French. At the dawn of its appearance, ceiling models had the appearance of symmetrical stylized flowers or green wreaths with leaves diverging diametrically from the center.

Use in composition
Today the choice of options for textures and color design is much wider. It can be heraldic ornaments, geometric patterns, abstract compositions with an unassuming pattern that fit perfectly into modern style solutions.
Their shape can be very diverse:
- round;
- oval;
- square;
- polygonal
- with curved edges.
If in former times such functional elements of the decor were used exclusively for decorating ceilings, today they are often used to design side lighting.
Properly selected socket can emphasize the originality of the execution of the lighting device and improve the interior.
Using several small outlets of different sizes, but with a similar repeating pattern, it is convenient to make original installations.
The main types of connection points
Stylized sockets can be perfectly combined with eaves, borders and fillets, acting as a worthy addition to the interior, or else take on the role of a bright accent of decor.
No. 1 - classification of products by type of material
The first models of ceiling sockets were made mostly of plaster, less often of wood. Production of modern gypsum products has been built on centuries-old traditions. The only difference is that special modifying additives are used to improve the plasticity of the material.
Gypsum is a rather plastic material, the properties of which masters use when working through even small parts, giving volume to the product's topography.
Outlets made of plaster, are known for their excellent technical characteristics. They are “indifferent” to the effects of the environment and do not require serious care. Not less popular are synthetic products: polyurethane and foam sockets on the ceiling.
Synthetic polymer is resistant to deformation under the action of temperature changes, so that outlets made of it can be installed in unheated and wet rooms.
The main advantage of polymeric materials is lightness, which greatly simplifies the installation process. But they do not have such a precise detailing of the pattern, like the plaster models.
Unlike gypsum analogs, polymer products do not break or crack if they are accidentally broken by the installation technology.
The only drawback of polymer products - a short service life. After five years, they begin to turn yellow. The defect can be repaired only by applying a new layer of paint, or by completely replacing the element that has lost its presentability.
A separate niche in the market is occupied by products that have the texture of a noble stone, for example, marble.
Models made of natural material are used to embody traditional architectural forms in the modern interior, which were typical of royal castles and palaces.
No. 2 - division into types according to an installation method
Depending on the installation method, there are:
- False Sockets for masking electric points are products with a smooth base, on which decorative elements are located.
- Mortise models they are patterns laid out on a substrate, which, after the completion of the installation, are perceived together with the ceiling surface as a whole.
Models of the mortise type in front of the overlapping counterparts benefit from the fact that, due to the invisibility of the joints, they look like a natural continuation of the ceiling.

By way of installing sockets under the chandelier are divided into overhead and mortise. Surface view is much easier to work.
Installation of the wall socket consists in fixing it to the ceiling on the adhesive composition, on the self-tapping screws or on the glue with screws in the complex
Mortise outlets are a spectacular ornament applied to the substrate
Mortise socket is much more difficult to install, but as a result, it almost "merges" with the surface of the ceiling, forming the effect of finely made stucco

№3 - on decorative design
Depending on the decorative design ceiling sockets are of two types:
- Profile models with a smooth surface. They are made on the basis of a stretched profile and represent a shape that includes several flat mixed-sized geometric figures inscribed into each other.
- Sockets with sculpted surface and embossed forms. In models of this type, the smooth base of the product is decorated with individual parts and decorative elements.
By installing an electric point decorated with many elements, you can construct a three-dimensional picture or a lacy ceiling under a chandelier. Beautifully decorated stucco easily disguise all the errors and imperfections of the design and layout of the room.
Sockets with a sculpted surface are often designed in any style, so that they can be used to emphasize the theme of the interior.
Often found on sale and sockets dome type. They have a concave shape. But such models are mounted only in suspended structures, thereby creating the illusion of vast space while improving the room acoustics.
It looks interesting ceiling sockets concave in the form of a square, a diamond or a rectangle. Such structures are called caissons. They are mounted on the type of cassette ceiling.
Relief models, supplemented with elements of stucco, give the surface lightness and volume, making it airier and more elegant
Criteria for competent choice of model
Choose sockets on the ceiling in accordance with the dimensions of the lighting device. Ideally, the borders of artificial stucco should not protrude beyond the limits of the projection of the chandelier. The choice of functional element of the decor depends on the area of the room and the height of its ceilings. So, for rooms with an area of 15 squares and above, it is worth choosing models with a diameter of 40 cm.
But even when choosing a volumetric stucco of small size, it is necessary to give preference to products with a clear detailed drawing. Detailing the ornament will create the desired effect and draw attention to a small, but expressive element of decor in a small room.
This decorative element can occupy both a small area limited by the dimensions of the chandelier and the main area of the entire ceiling of the room.
In addition, the outlet must be in harmony with the other elements of the decor used in the design of the walls and ceiling.
The choice is determined by the ultimate goal of the created room style:
- Wooden sockets Perfect for decoration of living rooms and hallways in houses made of timber or log. They will be harmoniously combined with a wooden staircase and other elements of interior decoration, made of the same natural material.
- Sockets of foam and polystyrene foam suitable for decoration in modern styles, for example, high-tech, modern or art deco. They are perfectly amenable to painting, easily taking on the brilliance of all applied layers of coating.
- Sockets made of plaster and marble chips will look spectacular in the halls with high ceilings. They often act as a symbol of luxury and wealth, emphasizing the exclusivity of design.
The products used for decorating the ceiling are selected from the same type of material, remembering that, for example: gypsum stucco against the background of the same foam baguette looks tasteless.
Together with well-chosen moldings and cornices, the ceiling outlet is able to give completeness to the repair, highlighting favorably the aristocratic style of the room.
Connection Point Technology
Gypsum ceiling sockets do not require installation of an additional mounting system. The main thing is to ensure reliable fixation.
For the installation of the ceiling outlet under the chandelier, you must prepare:
- plastic chopies;
- couplings;
- drill bit;
- self-tapping screws;
- screwdriver;
- pliers;
- gypsum mortar;
- small spatula;
- insulating tape;
- capacity for mixing the solution.
Suspension of the light fixture to the ceiling will require a metal hook or a standard mounting bracket.
The size of the mounting bar or hook with a lock is chosen in accordance with the weight and dimensions of the illuminant
When carrying out work, you will also need a steady stepladder or table that can support the weight of an adult. Do not use as a stand stools, mounted on each other. It may be hazardous to health.
Stage # 1 - preparatory work
Before installation, you must de-energize the room by turning off circuit breaker corresponding lighting and power branch in the distribution board. To make sure that there is no voltage in the network, you need to touch the displayed ends of the wires with a screwdriver indicator. It should not shine.
After that, by applying the outlet to the surface, the ceiling is marked.
A metal hook fixing the chandelier is passed into the central hole of the stucco molding and the electrical cable coming from the shield
To install the hook in the intended place, first, with the aid of a poorest drill, make a hole with a depth of 7-8 cm. The plastic chopik is sunk into it so that it fits snugly to the walls, and then the metal hook is screwed.
To prevent dust and sand from entering the punch chuck when drilling the hole, put a disposable cup on the drill before starting work
To attach the mounting bar, it is first applied to the installation site so that it does not interfere with the wiring, and mark the points of the holes for the dowels.
When planning to hang a massive chandelier, we recommend using a cross-shaped mounting plate. It has a larger area of coverage and a greater number of holes for fixation to the ceiling.
Dowels are drilled into the holes drilled with a perforator, and then the bar is mounted, fixing it by screwing in the screws
Correctly fixed mounting plate will act as a guarantee of reliability of fastening of the installed lighting device.
Stage # 2 - Electrical Wiring
For installation of internal wiring a groove is made in the ceiling surface using a wall chaser or an ordinary chisel. The electrical wire is placed in a special casing, which will subsequently be closed during the finishing works.
In case of need to increase the wire, use shrink tape or special couplings.
Wiring is performed in one of the ways:
- Using couplings. The wires coming out of the ceiling are inserted into the couplings and fixed with bolts.
- By twisting the wires between themselves. But it should be borne in mind that such a twist will oxidize over time, as a result, sooner or later it will begin to warm up.
When connecting the ends of the electric cable, it is important to observe their compliance - to connect the same type of wires in pairs.
Determining cable ownership will help polymer insulation color. Phase wire is usually hidden in red or brown insulation, zero - in blue or blue, and grounding - in a yellow-green sheath.
To connect the wires using the coupling with a lever and a button, squeeze the spring, and then lead the bare end of the wire into the cavity
Some novice masters connect electrical wires among themselves by bending their ends into hooks. But to get a strong connection and create a normal contact, the bare ends of the electrical cable must be twisted or soldered.
After the installation is completed, the bare sections of the wires are necessarily insulated with high-quality insulating tape.

Step 1: We start the installation of the ceiling ceiling outlet by preparing the surface: removing dust, washing or scraping with a spatula if necessary
Step 2: If the outlet model does not have a hole cut through the center, mark it by attaching the base of the cap to the product
Step 3: In order to cut the hole exactly in the center, we outline once again the line of the upcoming cut with compass
Step 4: Drill a hole of arbitrary diameter in the center of the ceiling outlet. From it on the marked line we saw through a hole of the required size.
Step 5: We attach the socket with the cut hole to the installation site. If nothing will interfere with the connection of the chandelier, we modify the cut line with sandpaper
Step 6: Try on the masking cap of the chandelier together with the socket to make sure that the connecting bolt is enough to fix the chandelier
Step 7: Apply a suitable adhesive to the back of the outlet, not reaching its edge about 3 cm
Step 8: After waiting for the adhesive composition specified by its manufacturer to dry, we connect the chandelier using the usual method

Stage # 3 - fixing the gypsum base
To fix the base from the wrong side put a plaster solution on it. It is easiest to spread the solution evenly over the surface with a spatula.
When working with gypsum mortar, it should be taken into account that it hardens within a few minutes, therefore it is necessary to dilute it in portions.
The base with the applied solution is pressed to the surface and fixed in this position for several minutes, until it acquires the desired strength. For fixing, you can use a backup. To minimize damage to decorative embossed elements, soft rags are placed under the support.
If it is necessary to hang a massive product, for additional fixation use self-tapping screws 10 cm long. They are screwed in 6-10 points at an equidistant distance. When screwing in the screws, they try to bury the cap so that later it is easy to disguise it with a plaster mortar.
Features of installation of mortise sockets
To secure the mortise socket, the base of the product is applied to the surface and marks are made on the contour with a pencil.
According to the outlined contour in the building structure, a recess is cut down for the installation of a recess for insertion; the depth of the cut is determined by focusing on the height of the base of the outlet and the thickness of the solution
All potholes and cracks formed in the process of cutting, it is not difficult to patch up the plaster solution. To fix the plaster elements on a reinforced concrete base, use screws, supplemented with a wire winding.
For fixing heavy structures used fastening systems, referred to as nags. Place for the installation of nags should be smooth, devoid of embossed ornaments.
The work is performed in the following sequence:
- Through-holes are drilled for mounting fasteners in the socket, and grooves of 15 mm depth are made in the front part of the product.
- Screws are screwed through the holes.
- The galvanized wire pieces are screwed to the caps of the self-tapping screws in such a way that the “whiskers” disperse in different directions.
- The installed structure is covered with a layer of gypsum mortar.
- “Mustaches” diverging in two directions are inserted into the holes and fastened. Excess wire is cut. Grooves covered with plaster solution.
The number of such nags is determined based on the weight of the outlet and the design features of the ceiling itself.
Two or three self-tapping screws are enough for a D150-200 mm socket, products with a circle of 60 cm — three or four fasteners, designs of 70 cm or more in size — five or six nags
To avoid corrosion, cut off the ends of the wire, it is desirable to cover with a layer of varnish. The gap between the installed outlet or ceiling base is filled with plaster solution. Furrows formed after hardening of the gypsum are easily removed by cleaning them with an emery paper.
Fastening of polyurethane products
Ceiling sockets made of polyurethane foam, attached to the base of the glue. For work use "liquid nails" or a special glue created for molding with polyurethane foam.
The ceiling itself at the place of installation of the outlet is covered with a layer of primer of deep penetration. Working with polyurethane foam products is quite easy. Soft material is easy to cut and convenient to fasten to the surface.
For installation of polyurethane foam ceiling sockets in the center with a sharp knife in the decorative product a hole is made for removing the electrical cable and installing the hook
The diameter of the hole is made small so that the fastening system is completely covered with a cap. Gluing stucco carried out after complete drying of the primer composition. For this purpose, polymer glue is applied on the back side of the base with a uniform layer.
Stucco, with the hook and electric wire through the hole, is applied to the ceiling. To ensure the adhesion strength at the time of hardening of the glue, the molding should be pressed as tightly as possible to the surface. The excess glue that has protruded around the edges must be removed immediately with a brush or cotton cloth moistened with water.
After the glue hardens, the chandelier is hung on a mounting bar or hook. The wires are connected by one of the above methods.
Strength testing
Before hanging the chandelier, it is necessary to check the quality of fastening for durability of both the hook and the ceiling outlet itself. To do this, a weight is suspended on a plaster stucco, the weight of which is gradually increased.
The design must withstand a load whose weight is approximately equal to the weight of the installed fixture.
If during the 10-minute test, as the weight of the load increases, the structure has not shifted and has not moved away from the floor, then the mount is strong.
