When installing a chimney, there are problems with the formed gaps in the roof, which must be eliminated. This process includes waterproofing and sealing the space around the pipe with special materials.
Even with the tight placement of the pipe, small gaps still form. These gaps are sufficient for water to fall inside the house during rain. In just one year, moisture will corrode the roof, and then the supporting structures of the house, so eliminating gaps is vital repair work.
What can be done
It is easiest to install an apron that is made independently in place of the gaps. Or buy in a finished construction of stainless steel, which is closely connected to the pipe and secured with a steel clamp.
To eliminate small gaps, a silicone-based sealant is used, which is not afraid of high temperatures. The process of eliminating gaps depends on what material forms the basis of the roof.
Slate roof
To close the gaps on the slate roof, the following is done:
- A round hole is cut in a piece of sheet steel. An element will be needed to finish the ridge;
- An asbestos cement overlay is worn on the chimney;
- After the construction is coated with a solution of asbestos cement in a ratio of 1: 2;
- A solution of asbestos cement poured joints between the slate and the chimney pipe.
Roof Tile
Tile flooring is best covered with a mixture of sand and cement. For this you need:
- Make a galvanized collar that is installed on the roof for pouring mortar;
- Next, the diluted solution is poured into the space between the pipe and the roof;
- Excess mortar must leak out on a special hand-made slope.
Bitumen roof
For a bituminous roof, waterproofing from Wakaflex tape is suitable. The necessary blank for the roof is cut from it, with the help of the nozzle for the case for the pipe it is attached. All remaining gaps are covered with bituminous mastic.
Roofing
To seal the gaps between the chimney and the corrugated roof, it is best to use a special silicone rubber apron. It is sold in hardware stores. Silicone aprons do not lose their properties in the range from -50 to 130 degrees.
Apron sealing process:
- A gap is made in the cap of the apron, which is slightly smaller than the cross section of the pipe;
- An apron is put on the chimney;
- The base of the chimney is sealed with a gasket;
- All joints between the roof, pipe and gasket are treated with silicone sealant.
