How to cut GVL yourself with a simple knife

Many, having read the information about the beneficial properties of GVL (gypsum fiber sheet), decide to use it for decoration. For most inexperienced people in construction, this is almost the same material as drywall, only with higher strength and durability and, accordingly, with more high price. However, they often forget that the technology of cutting and handling of this material should be different than with drywall. It’s worth mentioning right away that there shouldn’t be a question about how to cut a plasterboard with a simple knife. Masters strongly do not recommend this. Why?

The fact is that there is only one similarity between GVL or GKL - both are done on the basis of building gypsum, otherwise the gypsum fiber sheet differs from gypsum board in the following:

  • It has a uniform internal mass;
  • It does not have a dense top cover made of paper;
  • But inside it are cellulose fibers that provide reinforcement;
  • This material is strong enough;
  • Incombustible;
  • Able to withstand humidity up to 70%.

This is due to the fact that the material is quite fragile, it does not bend, and can break under the slightest deformation. Accordingly, if you try to cut it not with a special tool, but with improvised objects like an ordinary knife, it will begin to crumble and you will not succeed in achieving a smooth cut. Most likely, the stove will simply be spoiled.

The use of a rigid construction knife with regular replacement of blades is allowed. Suitable hacksaws designed for GVL. Their teeth are located at a certain angle, which ensures the absence of dust and crumbs. You can use an angle grinder, but you need to be prepared for what is in the process there will be a lot of dust, so you need to stock up on special goggles and respirator. An electric jigsaw is also suitable, preferably with a built-in dust collector. Canvas can be taken on wood in 4 mm increments.

To get an even cut with smooth edges, you need to mark the sheet. Closer to the marking line, attach a metal rail and draw a construction knife several times along the marking. The result should be a groove with a depth of slightly more than 2/3 of the sheet thickness. Then you need to sharply pull the sheet towards yourself, and it will break along the cut line.

When using other tools, you must adhere to the same technology so that when cutting similar materials.
