Some old houses or apartments still have wooden windows. If they are painted with varnish, do not rush to replace them with plastic ones. Wood is an environmentally friendly material, if restored, it can last a long time. Repair will make the wooden frames functional and attractive again. You can update the frames, with minor flaws, yourself.

The gap between the frame and the box
Often, draft is blowing heavily from old windows. In such cases, a gap can be found between the frame and the box. You can get rid of this drawback by laying a quality seal in the window sash. The sealant should be selected from rubber, foam rubber or PVC. At the same time, two tasks will be solved: repair and insulation of the window.
Sometimes a defect can be eliminated without a seal. The hinges must be bent to the other side of the sash half-spike. If the gap extends over the entire length of the window door, then all the hinges must be bent. If the problem is in one place, then the loop is bent only where the gap is.
The shutter closes tightly
One of the problems with wooden windows is skew. Sashes may close poorly or not close at all. The loops may settle over time. If so, then it is worth moving them a little higher or lower on the frame. There is an option with a wire that needs to be wound on loops to adjust the height.
Also, the frame could be skewed due to the swelling of the tree. This often leads to deformation of the frame. You will have to remove the excess with a plane, fitting the frame to the box.
Window skew
If the fastenings in the corners of the frame are loosened, this can lead to a skew of bindings. You can fix the problem with the help of metal corners screwed to the binding corners.
The nests for the corners are selected with a chisel, and the corners themselves are attached with self-tapping screws. So they will not protrude above the frame. The place around the corner is puttyed and sanded with sandpaper.
Rotting of the frame part
Old windows may be affected by fungus or mold. To rot does not spread further, it must be removed with a chisel along with part of the frame, while capturing a few whole sections. The recess is covered with resin, wood glue. A carved new piece of wood is placed there and secured. After complete hardening, the surface is leveled with sandpaper or polished with a machine in the direction of the wood fibers. So you can get a very smooth surface. Small pits can be covered with acrylic putty or wood putty.
If the windows have an old putty or silicone, then they also need to be removed. This can be done neatly with a stationery knife. The main thing is to prevent scratches on the glass.

After this, the frames must be sanded by removing the old coat of varnish. Then the surface of the frame is impregnated with an antiseptic and primed.
Prepared windows are coated with clear or colored varnish. So you can get a beautiful updated wooden window, which will last for many more years.
