Everyone who at least once in their life was engaged in construction or repair with their own hands was annoyed by a broken off self-tapping screw in the midst of work. A hat breaks off more often, but there are times when a break occurs in the middle of a screw. If the design allows, it is better to move the place of twisting a little to the side. And if, for example, the self-tapping screw broke when fixing the door hinge, then it will have to be unscrewed.
If the screw is not completely tightened, it is quite easy to unscrew it. The easiest way is when the body is tightly clamped with pliers and twisted counterclockwise. In most cases this works. Putting a piece of rubber between the ripped head and a screwdriver may also help. Rubber allows it to be pressed more tightly and creates resistance to sliding.
After sawing a groove with a hacksaw for metal with a depth of 2 mm, a broken self-tapping screw can be removed. Being careful not to damage the structure, the same cut can be done using a small grinder.
Another method involves gluing a nut onto the top of a broken-off self-tapping screw with epoxy glue (“cold welding”). In most cases, this method helps to unscrew the stuck part.
Those who like to repair or craft something on the farm have a set of extractors. So they call a device similar to a screwdriver, which has coarse and sparse threads on the tip. The screw with the help of the extractor should be twisted with pressure, counterclockwise. If a broken screw does not lend itself, then you can first tap on it with a chisel.
If the case is completely hopeless - a piece of a self-tapping screw stuck tight, then you will have to resort to extreme methods. Choosing a suitable drill bit for metal, you can drill a small recess in the top of a broken screw. Perhaps then you can insert a screwdriver and try to unscrew. And this method did not help?
Then you have to completely destroy the self-tapping screw with a metal drill. When carrying out such work, care should be taken: wear gloves and goggles and try not to damage the structure. As a result, a hole of a larger diameter is formed. Having screwed the self-tapping screw of the corresponding diameter, you can solve the problem.
Having shown ingenuity, patience, accuracy and attentiveness, a broken self-tapping screw can always be unscrewed without consequences for the design.
