  • 3 Crack repair

The situation when interior doors crack open, arises due to the use in their manufacture insufficiently dried wood, low humidity in the room and significant fluctuations temperature.

As a result of door drying, the following defects may occur:

• Reduction in size
• The formation of voids in the junction of wooden door elements (panels)
• The formation of cracks and chips

If the deformation of the elements is not critical, you can try to repair the door yourself, without resorting to the help of specialists.

Clearing the gap between the door and the frame

Due to drying out, the door may decrease in size, as a result of which it will begin to hang on its hinges, and the latch will not reach the level of the box. In such cases, the door can be repaired by attaching additional strips of appropriate thickness to its edges.

First of all, it is recommended to rearrange the hinges so that the gap remains only at the bottom of the door. Next, nail a bar of the appropriate size to the bottom edge. The lateral clearance is eliminated in a similar way, the bar in this case should be nailed to the hinge edge of the door. The repaired areas must be puttied, thoroughly cleaned with fine-grained sandpaper and painted in the color of the door.

Reinforcement panels

When the strapping elements dry up, the panels can become loose and even fall out of the groove. This defect can be eliminated by reinforcing the structure with metal squares. Squares must be fixed on the strapping bars with self-tapping screws. Another method to eliminate the defect involves a full repair with the dismantling of the strapping elements, their processing and reassembly using glue and clamping devices.

Crack repair

The technology for eliminating cracks depends on their nature. Small cracks or chips resulting from drying out can be repaired by filling with a suitable color or sawdust mixed with epoxy.

Eliminating large, through gaps will require more complex repairs. You can close them with wooden inserts of the appropriate size, smeared with carpentry glue. Irregularities resulting from the repair are putty and processed. Traces of repairs can be hidden by priming the entire surface of the door and re-coating it with varnish or paint.
