How much time do people spend in the kitchen? Studies show that on average fifteen years of one’s life, a person is there. And so I want to enjoy the beauties of Spain, Greece, Italy, drink hot espresso in some quiet cafe on on the shores of the Mediterranean Sea... To at least somehow quench your desire, complete your cuisine in the Mediterranean style.
Siesta in the kitchen: design, photo and scenery
What is this style about? It is a combination of light colors with elegant furniture, brass decor elements and modern technical solutions. This is a mass of free space and functionality of each element. This is your cozy corner by the sea.
The main distinguishing features of the Mediterranean style in the interior of the kitchen are the following:
- low furniture made of natural wood mixed with forging;
- ceramic tableware;
- a mixture of colors of the sea and land;
- pillows;
- ceramic tiles on the floor and walls;
- plain patterns.
And at the same time, this style is completely devoid of any pretentiousness, it is laid-back and romantic, perfect for natures with such a character.
However, before deciding on the final choice, it is better to consider whether it is suitable for the premises. The kitchen should be spacious and bright, otherwise the sensation of being on the seashore will not work.
Basic color combinations
The main color schemes came from the Mediterranean countries: Italy, Spain, Greece, Turkey, Morocco, France, where it historically originated.
There are two main directions of color solutions in the Mediterranean style in the interior of the kitchen:
- marine - all kinds of combinations of blue shades;
- earthen - from light yellow before dark green colors.
However, no one forces to adhere to one scheme, the Mediterranean style is different in that it can be organically to enter many elements of other styles, while he does not lose his beauty and a sense of completeness composition.
Decoration and interior
Walls in the Mediterranean style are almost never glued with wallpaper (see here). The main emphasis is on painting walls this article) with ceramic tiles with patterns or natural stone. Primary colors - pale blue or beige (also see beige tones). Also a characteristic difference for this style is to give the walls a slight curvature, a relief that shades the room.
The bulk of the floors are made of tiles of all kinds of sand tones in harmony with the walls. This feature goes well with the desire to have a warm floor in your kitchen.
The ceiling is usually painted white. We should also talk about the love of wooden structures. If there are any kind of wooden ceilings on the ceiling, then they are emphasized, painting them dark brown or dark red tones.
Furnishing
Before proceeding with the selection of furniture and planning its arrangement, it is necessary to take into account that a Mediterranean-style kitchen is not only a kitchen, but also a dining room (see also this publication). The place where all the relatives available for gathering in a noisy and cheerful crowd. So, you need to immediately separate a large area under the dining table, and then do the rest.
It is best to use functional and simple furniture, which will ideally fit into the created interior, in the design of a Mediterranean-style kitchen. There is no need to create an effect of congestion or to shift the view of the situation, since the main theme is free space and the presence of the sea.
The basis of any kitchen is its suite. The best material in our case is natural wood (see also here), which is often artificially aged. If it is not possible to order such furniture, you can always use laminated wood-fiber or chipboards to look like natural wood.
A special place in the kitchen stands out for the hood, which often occupies a central position in the kitchen. Various brass and copper inserts and other decorative elements are also welcome. As a countertop, the best option is to use natural or artificial stone. Such material will perfectly emphasize the interior, and its environmental cleanliness and durability will allow you to enjoy the new thing for many years.
Plumbing is better to choose brass or bronze. The usual brilliant mixer will attract attention and spoil the big picture. The sink is preferable butler's or metal, the tone of the plumbing.
The entire kitchen arsenal: a microwave, oven, stove and other equipment is better to integrate into the headset or purchase those that will not attract attention.
We should also talk about the seat. The refectory table should allow at least six people to sit together. A beautiful solution will be to execute it with a stone countertop on forged legs and supplement with the same chairs. Another option is a wooden table, which will be combined with a kitchen set and wicker cane or willow chairs. It will look especially good in an old wooden house with partitions.
Decorating the kitchen in a Mediterranean Italian style
Decor elements are an integral part of the Mediterranean style. It is interesting that household goods are used in this capacity: pots suspended on the walls, neatly arranged ceramic dishes on the shelves.
The windows usually use wooden shutters, so curtains (e.g. roman or rolled) also bear exclusively decorative purpose. They are usually made of light material that is in harmony with the environment.
As lighting fixtures, it is best to use antique-style chandeliers (you read here) and wall lights.
Conclusion
To summarize, the Mediterranean style is the feeling of a house on the seashore. This is a classic style that does not scare away the abundance of bright colors, like country, and does not require many decorated items, like retro.
If you want a large open space where you can gather several generations of your family at the same table, then the Mediterranean-style cuisine is just for you.
