Another plus in favor of choosing a wallpaper is the ability to independently perform simple work, receiving savings and pleasure from the result. However, the surface of the walls is uneven and many are stopped by the question: how to glue wallpaper in the corners?
The glued canvases repeat the unevenness of the walls, hiding part of them. But in the corners it happens differently. Even non-woven wallpaper, easily stretched like a fabric, wrinkles when drying on uneven corners, wrinkles, distortions appear. Later they peel off in these places. To avoid this, it is worth knowing how to glue them correctly.
Wall corner preparation
This will allow during gluing to completely remove excess glue and air. When preparing the outer corner, it is imperative to use a perforated corner. This will help to create straight lines and wallpaper properly, protect against plaster collapse during light strokes that happen, for example, when furniture is skidded.
When applying a primer to the walls, a roller is used. Use a brush to thoroughly primer the corners. Choose the order of the sticker sheets and decide where to start. It may be more convenient to start from the edge of a window or doorway. To get started, select a wall with a less noticeable angle, for example, in which the cabinet will stand.
Pick up a narrow strip of wallpaper cut from a roll across the width. Walk with it along the selected wall, trying out the layout options for the sheets. Choosing the option of how to properly glue corners with wallpaper, strictly follow the rules:
- joints of sheets in the corners are unacceptable;
- no matter how smooth the corner may seem, do not plan to paste over it with a solid sheet;
- instead of an overlap sticker, apply an overlap sticker followed by a double cut.
Moving the starting point, select the location of the first panel on the wall so that approximately the middle part of the next panel falls on the corner walls. Using a plumb line and a sharpened pencil, draw a vertical line on the wall. It is not necessary to draw a solid line, which may subsequently become noticeable.
You can draw barely noticeable centimeter-long marks every 20-30 cm and draw a line not from the junction, but, say, in one centimeter to the left or right, so that later this line closes. Such an inconspicuous line will serve as a reliable reference point and will not be revealed later at the junction itself, as sometimes happens.
Sticking the first cloths
Recall the sticker sequence:
- Open the wallpaper with the selection of the picture or without it (according to the instructions in the roll).
- Apply glue to the walls, the canvas, or to the walls and the canvas (according to the instructions).
- If the canvas is glued, then fold it so that the glue does not dry prematurely.
- Stick the canvas on the wall from the ceiling down, focusing on the vertical mark or on the extreme edge of the already glued canvas, combining the pattern.
- Carefully remove the remaining air with a roller or brush, smoothing from the center to the edges.
- Using a wide spatula with a clerical knife, trim the top and bottom of the panel, smooth it again with a roller, if necessary, coat with glue and smooth again.
How to paste wallpaper: inner corners
- From a single piece of cloth we cut a strip 5 centimeters wide wider than the distance from the last cloth to angle (measure at the ceiling, in the middle and at the floor, take the largest), the remaining piece will be glued after first.
- Coat with glue (according to the instructions for the wallpaper) and glue the prepared canvas, smoothing with a roller or first with a brush on the wall, then in the corner and then a strip on the next wall, removing excess glue and air.
- In places where the wallpaper wrinkles noticeably, we make horizontal cuts 5-10 cm from each other.
- Using a plumb line, we draw a vertical line for sticking the remaining piece of the canvas so that it glues 2 cm overlap onto the previous canvas in its narrowest part.
- We coat and glue the remaining canvas, combining a flat edge with the applied vertical line, smoothing, remove the remaining glue and air.
- We prepare the knife, for this, before each cut, break off the tip of the knife according to the marks on the blade.
- Using a knife and a wide spatula, we cut without tearing off, in one go, both layers of the canvas so that the cut passes in a centimeter from the edge of the second strip.
- We remove the cut off excess, if necessary, bend the edges and apply it with glue, roll it with a roller.
After double trimming, an inconspicuous joint remains. If this does not work the first time, remove the glued strips and repeat with great diligence. It will turn out necessary, and you will know how to properly paste the wallpaper in the corners.
How to wallpaper the outer corners of a room
After the sticker of the first corner piece of canvas, the wrapped part of the wallpaper should be at least 5 cm. Mark the next sheet with glue so that the overlap in the narrowest part is at least 2 centimeters.
Carefully expel the remains of glue and air. We prepare the knife blade and, applying a wide spatula, cut off both canvases without tearing off. We remove the excess, glue and roll it if necessary.
Useful tips from specialists
- If you find an air bubble and it does not smoothen, puncture it, remove the air, pour a little glue with a syringe and smooth it with a roller.
- Sometimes, when clipping from above, below, or at a window and doorway, the wallpaper is chewed. Let them dry a little and repeat the cut. Perhaps the knife is dull and it's time to change the blade.
- Avoid drafts in the room, this can lead to premature uneven drying and peeling of the paintings.
- Disconnect the sockets and switches in the room in advance and remove the frames from them. You can return to the place immediately after pasting.
- When gluing to problem areas, add 10% PVA glue to the water when preparing the glue.
- If old wallpaper is not well removed, wet it with a primer using a paint roller. Remove immediately until the primer has dried.
