What should be in the kitchen?
It would seem that by purchasing or privatizing housing, you have the right to settle down to your taste and do everything in it that it pleases - after all, this is your private property, and this right is enshrined in the Civil Code of the Russian Federation. However, there is a caveat - these actions must not violate the rights of other people or contradict other regulatory legal acts.
To maximize the safety of apartment buildings, the use of gas in them is standardized and monitored by several services at once: Gorgaz, firefighters, BTI and ZhEK.

That is why it is forbidden to make noise at night and on weekends, demolish load-bearing walls or arbitrarily change the conditions for using gas - this can harm neighbors, and therefore ceases to be your personal business.
To please everyone, a kitchen must have the following characteristics:
- Volume not less than 15 m3 for a standard 4-burner hob. Note that with an average ceiling height of 2.5 m in high-rise buildings, this corresponds to an area of only 6 sq. m. floor. For a small hob or a 2-burner stove, only 8 m is enough3, or 3.2 sq. m.
- Ceiling height not less than 220 cm. If all the ceilings in the house are lower, or in the kitchen the ceiling is tilted, it is allowed to install the stove in a room with a height of 2 m, or even less - by individual consideration and agreement.
- There must be a window that provides enough daylight to illuminate the entire kitchen.
- The window should open - at least with a window or for ventilation - for fresh air to flow in instead of what burns with gas.
- Natural ventilation for the entire volume of the room - as a rule, an outlet is provided by the developer, and your business is not to close it or reduce it.
These norms are mandatory for the whole of Russia, the rest of the requirements are based on local legislation or on documents that are of a recommendatory nature and are not mandatory.

Among these requirements is the decoration of the wall near the slab with non-combustible materials - for example, plaster, paint, ceramic tiles or glass, - from the floor and 80 cm above the slab, and at least 10 cm wider on both parties
More importantly for our topic - sometimes local regulations require the mandatory separation of the living room from the place. gas stove installations, often even with a specific requirement of the door to the kitchen.
In addition, earlier similar clauses were in all-Russian documents, and, although at the moment they are not in effect, some gas workers continue to make demands in the old fashioned way. We'll talk more about all the references to the kitchen door in the documents, current and outdated, further.
Regulatory requirements for a kitchen door
The answer to the question of whether it is possible to remove a kitchen door with a gas stove is controversial and controversial. Confusion arises due to insufficient coverage of this issue in federal documents - there is no single ban throughout Russia. SNiPs and GOSTs, to which gas workers refer, have today been canceled in whole or in part, or are advisory, not mandatory.
However, in some cities and regions, local authorities are adopting decrees prohibiting such redevelopment. And now about everything in order.
SP 62.13330.2011 (former SNiP 42-01-2002) and SP 42-101-2003 regulate the location of the gas distribution to consumers - basically, general concepts concerning more developers than residents. For ordinary gas users, the 3rd section can be useful, which describes the requirements for a room with a gas stove, which we talked about above: volume, height, window with a vent and ventilation.
Also curious NS. 6.22 and 6.23 in SP 42-101-2003, regulating the distance and decoration of the walls around the stove or heating boiler. They recommend leaving 6 - 7 cm to the wall, not only from the back, but also from the side. In this case, the wall covering must be fireproof or hardly flammable: roofing steel, plaster, ceramic tiles, glass, etc.
But let us draw your attention: this is a recommendation, not a requirement, that is, it is not necessary to fulfill it.

Do not neglect the recommendations for the indentation of the gas stove from the walls and non-combustible finishes - this can lead to a fire
Although these documents are the main ones in matters of gas supply, there is no mention of the door in them, so let's move on.
Often, when checking, gas workers, demanding to install a door, refer to SNiP 2.04.08-87. According to him, if a gas stove is installed in a personal corridor, there should be a window in it, and a dense partition and a door should be separated from the living area.
Thus, this document does not require the installation of a door specifically in the kitchen, but obliges to tightly separate at least one room from the space with a gas stove. In addition, this document is absent from the current list of current GOSTs, SP and SNiPs that are mandatory to ensure the safety of buildings. This means that gas workers have no right to demand something from you, referring only to this document.
The rules for using gas in everyday life, approved back in 1990, have a similar meaning in paragraph 3.11, which prohibits sleeping and relax in a room with gas appliances - that is, the door should either be to the kitchen, or at least to one of the rooms, and better both.
In addition, this document prohibits the use of gas with a closed window or problems with ventilation, leave manual appliances unattended or remodel the kitchen without proper registration.

Moving the kitchen to the corridor, if its area allows it, will help to increase the number of living rooms - a good solution for redevelopment
However, in the list of mandatory norms approved by the Decree of the Government of the Russian Federation of December 26, 2014 and mentioned above, this document is also absent. This means that at the moment it can also only be of a recommendatory nature.
In addition to gas services, the absence of a door to the kitchen with a gas stove may not satisfy the requirements of firefighters. They refer to their SP 4.13130.2009 Fire protection systems.
It had a point 5.1.11, according to which the kitchen door, in the presence of a gas stove, must open into the kitchen - and therefore, exist in principle, and be swing, and not sliding. But this point invalidated 20.06.2011, and in the current documents of firefighters and the Ministry of Emergencies, there are no such instructions.
Rules and restrictions for Muscovites
As we have already mentioned, the absence of a ban on removing the kitchen door in federal, all-Russian documents does not mean that such a decision is permissible. Regulations for gasification of residential buildings can be adopted by the local government and operate within the city or region.
The fire safety instructions are created by the house management company and therefore may differ even in neighboring buildings. Such provisions and instructions are often developed on the basis of the outdated SNiPs described above, but unlike them, they are mandatory.
Taking into account this situation, we, alas, will not be able to give an unequivocal answer about the need for a kitchen door for every Russian - we will only talk about the situation in the capital.

The Moscow government back in 2005 adopted a resolution concerning, inter alia, standards for gas pipelines and their location in apartments
It contains several points at once that prohibit getting rid of the door to the kitchen.
According to NS. 3.6, the gas pipeline inside the house must be in a non-residential area. If there is no door either to the kitchen or to the rooms, then the entire space is combined and is considered residential.
Paragraph 10.17 expressly prohibits combining gasified and residential premises. It is also impossible to do with a screen or a light partition, because p. 10.16 requires a tight-fitting door between the kitchen and the living area.

Please note that all these points require isolation from the living space, and not from the corridor - that is, the kitchen door can be removed if natural ventilation allows and the doors are preserved in at least one the room
Such a solution will not allow making a studio apartment, but making the kitchen more spacious, especially if you have a 2-room apartment or more, is quite possible.
It is completely forbidden to remove the door to the kitchen if your home is declared emergency. In such buildings, any redevelopment and reconstruction is prohibited, and the elimination of the door, even if you do not touch the doorway, is one of those.
Arrangement of a kitchen without a door
Guided by the documents, the door to the kitchen can be removed almost always if there is a closing room, and sometimes they even require to get rid of the door in order to increase the area of the kitchen by connecting it with corridor. However, such a solution is always considered a redevelopment, even if the doorway remains unchanged, and requires a change in the housing project and its approval in the relevant authorities.
You may be denied approval for a new project due to local regulations and require you to leave the door. But there is always a way out - we will talk about the options for solving such problems further.
Refusal from gasification
Even if you live in a multi-storey building with gas in every apartment, you have the right to refuse gasification, with the complete dismantling of all pipes, including the riser. In this case, the stove is installed electric, and if hot water supply is provided from gas water heater, it is replaced electric boiler.
The advantages of such a solution are obvious: you no longer have to communicate with gasmen and firefighters, you can unite at least the whole apartment, leaving only the load-bearing walls.

The kitchen will no longer have gas pipes and a meter, which look ugly, but cannot be hidden, and the decoration of the room will not turn yellow from gas burning and soot
However, there are also disadvantages: in order to do everything legally and subsequently pay a minimum for the light, you will have to run a lot. Plus, you'll probably need to run a new heavy-duty electric cable and fork out for an electric stove.
At the same time, the better the stove or hob you buy, the less electricity you will use: modern induction hobs are no more expensive than gas hobs.
If you have made this decision, the procedure is as follows:
- Get permission to switch to an electric stove from the management company - ZhEKe, for example. Perhaps they will require a new cable to be pulled from the meter that can withstand the stove, refrigerator, hood, electric kettle and other equipment turned on at the same time.
- Apply to the gas supplier with a statement to dismantle all gas equipment, attach copies of documents for the ownership of the apartment and a passport. The application must be signed by the chief engineer.
- By prior agreement, workers will come to you, cut off the pipe, and if a riser passes through your kitchen, they will transfer it outside the apartment.
- In the gorgaz you get a conclusion about the work performed, that the apartment is no longer supplied with gas.
- With the conclusion from the gas workers, you turn to the electricity supplier with a request to change the tariff - for users of electric stoves it is lower.
The whole procedure will cost about 2,000 rubles, but prices differ in different regions. A more significant problem is the need to run through the instances, often more than once, with all the queues.
True, today in many cities applications can be submitted electronically, on city government portals and enterprise websites.

In the project of the apartment, the location of the gas stove, if any, and the number of burners must be indicated. When you refuse gas, make changes to it
If, in addition to refusal of gas, it is planned to partially or completely demolish the wall, liquidate doors or other redevelopment, do not forget to reissue the apartment project and get approval from the interdepartmental commission.
Temporary doors for gas workers
There are situations when you just want to remove the door to the kitchen, where the gas stove is, and leave the opening from it within the same boundaries. If this is prohibited in your area, the easiest way to avoid complaints from gas service representatives is to hang the door only while they are being checked.
As a rule, they do not come just like that, and problems arise when you call them yourself, for example, to connect a new stove. In such a situation, their visit is predictable, and you can prepare for it.
The simplest, but not the most aesthetic option is not to dismantle the door frame, but only to remove the door leaf from the hinges when gas workers are not expected. Functionally, such a solution is the most convenient, and if you change your mind about abandoning the kitchen door, it can always be returned in a matter of minutes. However, empty hinges on an opening without a door look ugly.
If the doorway has already been cleaned, plastered and painted, it is possible to temporarily return the dismantled door together with the frame to it without damaging the repair. To do this, simply cover the opening with masking tape, and then carefully open the door frame in it and seal. Just do not leave such a decision for a long time, otherwise, someday, slamming or leaning heavily on the door, you will collapse to the floor with it.
Another option is a temporary accordion door

The accordion door is attached directly to the wall with 3 - 4 dowels or double-sided tape. After the commission, it will be enough to wipe off traces of glue or mask a few holes
True, this option may not suit the most picky commissions, because it does not close tightly and does not open into the kitchen, as firefighters sometimes require.
Sliding doors - partitions
This solution saves, even if you significantly expanded the doorway, demolished part of the wall. The equipment of the sliding partition will not free you from the need to redo the project of the room and to agree on the demolition of the wall, but in order to meet the demands of the gas workers to separate the living room with a door, it is quite enough.

A crowd of guests came and I want space - they opened the partition, but I wanted to retire in the kitchen from household members or fry fish - they closed it
Thus, you will get 2 layout options at once in one apartment.
Rectangular opening or arch
As a rule, when removing a door, they try to decorate the remaining opening beautifully - from simple painting to the formation of columns and arches of various configurations.
When looking for a similar design solution, consider the following:
- Even without changing the shape of the doorway, removing the door without replacing it with a similar one is considered a redevelopment that requires reflection in the project. In practice, such trifles are usually not paid attention to, but in the event of a sale, especially responsible employees of the BTI may make claims.
- If the door was in the load-bearing wall, the remaining small ledge on the common surface of the kitchen wall and the corridor cannot be cut or knocked down - better arrange it with a column.
- Do not make arches, columns and other structures of foam or polyurethane - they are too easily damaged and it is almost impossible to clean, and the entrance to the kitchen is a place with a high chance of catching or staining the coating.
- The walls and floors in the kitchen and the adjoining hallway must match. The transition of different wall finishes can still be arranged due to the neutral monochromatic interior color of the opening, but the floor without a threshold will look good only if the coating is the same and continuous. As a temporary way out - put a rug in place of the threshold.
As a result of such a seemingly insignificant change, your corridor will become lighter and more spacious, and the kitchen, even with a minimal area, will cease to seem like a closet.

Demolition of only part of the wall, expansion of the doorway, will help to maximize the kitchen, but at the same time it is convenient to place furniture
As a variant of this solution, if the wall with the kitchen door is not load-bearing, you can get rid of its upper part, above the doorway, thereby further illuminating the corridor and uniting the spaces. True, temporary solutions in case of checking gas workers in this case will be much more difficult to implement.
Kitchen-living room without wall
The desired solution for many is to combine the kitchen with the adjoining room, by completely or partially demolishing the wall between them. In typical layouts of 2-room apartments, such a solution allows not only turning a small kitchen and a small bedroom into common, spacious and functional space, but also significantly expand the bathroom due to the part of the corridor that led to kitchen.
The first thing that should worry you when this idea comes up - is it the load-bearing wall you want to demolish? If so, no one will approve of such a layout, and it will be extremely problematic to sell, re-register or inherit such housing. In addition, this threatens not only your safety, but also all neighbors from above.

A new, large room can, in addition to a full-fledged kitchen set, absorb the functions of a dining room and a living room, with a dining table, sofa and TV
If space permits, a children's play area can also be provided so that the child is supervised while you cook or eat.
Gas services for such a combination will require a tight-fitting door to this new space, separating it from the bedroom and other living rooms. In addition, it is necessary to expand the ventilation duct to ensure air renewal. If this is not possible, or you want to combine the kitchen with a single room, the choice will be between illegal redevelopment and a complete refusal to gasify the apartment.
Studio apartment with a single space
In many regions, it is also allowed to fully combine the space into a studio apartment. The only condition for the legality of such a combination will be a properly executed ventilation duct, which will allow you to completely renew the air in the room.

For zoning functional areas in a studio apartment, there are a lot of design solutions, from color and texture to light partitions
To calculate what hole is needed and whether you can implement it, you need to follow these steps:
- We multiply the area by the height of the ceilings - we get the cubic capacity of the room.
- We multiply the resulting figure by 3, because ventilation is needed in three times the volume.
- We add 1.5, the gas stove burns so much per hour - we get the required volume of natural ventilation per hour.
- To obtain the required area of the ventilation opening, the obtained ventilation volume must be divided by the air flow rate. The natural ventilation rate is taken into account in 2 m / s, and the required ventilation volume in m3/ hour, so you need to bring the indicators to a common denominator, having received a speed of 7200 m / hour, and only after that perform division.
- The resulting number will be the area of the hole in square meters - for example, for a kitchen-studio with an area of 33 sq. with ceilings of 2.7 m, you will need a hole of 0.037 sq. m., that is, a pipe with a diameter of 22 cm.
As you can see, even for a relatively small area, a solid ventilation hole is already required, so the arrangement of a studio with an area of 50 sq. M. and more, most likely, will assume the absence of gasification.

Disadvantages and subtleties of such solutions
No matter how much you want to demolish everything and get the maximum space in the apartment, you should be prepared for some of the inconveniences of such decisions. If you have never lived in a similar layout in the current family composition before, think carefully and weigh all the shortcomings so that you do not regret your choice later.
The first thing everyone talks about when they hear about the desire to remove the kitchen door is the spread of odors.

For the most part, this problem is solved by purchasing and installing a good hood, but sometimes it does not help either.
The second significant drawback is the lack of sound insulation, and in both directions. That is, while preparing breakfast in the kitchen, on the one hand, you can wake up sleeping household members, and on the other hand, you yourself will hear everything that happens in the adjoining bathroom.
And the third point that follows from the previous one is the lack of privacy. Maybe it's more pleasant for you to cook for your favorite TV series, without hearing the football that your husband watches? And so that children do not accidentally run in when hot oil sprinkles from a frying pan or deep fryer during the cooking process?
Or just sit with a friend or girlfriend in the evening, be secret? This is especially important for one-room apartments, where more than 1 - 2 people live.

In addition, in the case of a complete absence of partitions in a studio apartment, the entire space is always in sight - right from the doorway and from any window
This can take away the feeling of comfort and coziness, especially for sleep.
Regarding conditionally legal solutions - demolition of the kitchen door without redesigning the project or contrary to the ban of gas workers - keep in mind that problems may arise not only during the sale of housing, but also during the next scheduled inspection, reconnection slabs or checking the meter.
Yes, in most cases the case is resolved with a small amount of money, but not always. Yes, and such requirements were invented for a reason, but for your own safety!
