How to grow cucumbers in the heat? Many truck farmers have been complaining about the past few years: there are no cucumbers, the leaves have turned yellow, there are no ovaries. Very often we have a hot summer in the Kuban, or even a drought, there are no rains or very little. Cucumbers are moisture-loving plants. They are important not only the moisture in the soil. Dry hot air, they are hard to tolerate.

The first thing I want to advise - do not chase after the new advertised varieties, hybrids. Plant seeds for each region. In our region, the varieties of cucumbers Phoenix, Phoenix 640 have proved to be well established.

They well withstand drought, dry hot air. It should be said that it was they who did not leave my family without harvest this year. I will share my experience growing cucumbers.

For the future harvest of cucumbers it is important to prepare the soil from autumn, dig out the site, at the same time fill it with rotted compost or fertilizers.

Of course it is difficult to guess what it will be the next summer, dry or rainy. Heat, drought, or, conversely, frequent rains will test the garden plants. But the south is south, every year I plant cucumbers in pits about 25 × 25 cm in size, and about a bayonet in depth. Dug from the hole ground mixed with sand or sawdust, humus, add a tablespoon without top superphosphate. This soil mixture falls asleep in the excavated fossa, I plant there 4-5 seeds of cucumber (open ground) or 4-5 bushes of seedlings (greenhouse).

By the way, I do not fall asleep to the top, if it is an open ground, leaving the prepared soil near. After emergence, when the first 5-7 leaves appear, I sprinkle the plants with harvested soil.

Cucumbers in these holes are very convenient to water, as the water does not spread, but falls precisely to the roots of the plant. By the way, cucumbers should be watered only under the root of warm water in the sun. Almost after each watering the soil is mulched with dry grass, sawdust or hay. Mulch keeps the soil near the roots of the cucumber moist. The constant moisture at the roots is very beneficial for them - because the drying of the soil, uneven irrigation is one of the reasons why cucumbers are bitter.

I want to share one more experience of keeping the soil moist in a drought. Ogorodniki say that this way will protect your crops from weeds.

Before you put the seeds of cucumbers or bushes of seedlings into the ground, put a piece of dense cardboard (cardboard boxes in large quantities are thrown around any store) with a carved in the middle hole. Here in this hole sow seeds or plant seedlings. Cardboard will retain moisture, will not let the weeds germinate. You do not have to loosen the ground either. If after a while you slightly lift the sheet of cardboard, you will see a moist soil, earthworms, they will loosen up soil for you near your cucumbers, tomatoes, peppers or aubergines, and you will be saved time.
