Smoke during the kindling of a fireplace can occur due to back draft, when smoke instead of a chimney enters the room. There is also a rollover traction. The most likely fault here is open windows and doors through which a lot of air enters. Smoke a fireplace or stove during kindling can also be due to raw firewood. But if these reasons are excluded, then, most likely, the error lies in the design of the fireplace itself.

Design Errors
For example, the master incorrectly arranged the ventilation system, firebox and chimney. The fireplace may have been installed in the wrong room or in the wrong place. This happens less often than errors in the construction of the chimney. There are several of them:
- Bad insulation - if the chimney was not insulated during assembly, then thick smoke will ooze from all the cracks.
- Narrow chimney - everything is clear here: a narrow passage does not allow smoke to freely go outside. He has nowhere to go, and he rushes into the room in any way.
- A wide chimney is also a common design error. Smoke must be expelled under pressure, but this does not happen due to the large width of the passage. Smoke puffs hanging in a chimney. Air from the street fills the chimney and pushes the smoke back into the room.
- Large length of the upper part of the channel.
- Short pipe on top.
- There is no additional air intake channel.
When laying a fireplace, you must follow all the rules developed by professional designers. Independent changes in the design, such as bends, turns, etc., not provided for in the design, create additional obstacles for smoke to escape.
Particular attention should be paid to the tightness of the entire structure. If at least somewhere a small gap remains, then it will become a loophole for smoke.

Other causes of smoke
In addition, smoke can be affected by such factors:
- Poor fuel. Dirty and wet firewood can spark very much. Fungus or mold on a tree during combustion emits smoke with poison, which will negatively affect health.
- A bird that has fallen into a pipe, a fallen brick or other foreign objects also makes the channel too narrow. This prevents the smoke from leaving the chimney freely. Therefore, the pipe must be cleaned periodically.
- The soot collected in the pipe from the combustion of firewood affects the smoke output as well as the second reason.
- Strong winds can blow into the chimney and drive the smoke back into the room. It is impossible to eliminate this cause, it remains only to wait until the wind subsides.

But external causes are also the result of ill-conceived independent masonry of the fireplace. All of them lead to the appearance of smoke during kindling or burning. To prevent this, it is better to trust the device of the fireplace to competent professionals.
