The primer was not initially divided into any types. For all materials and situations, only one universal option was offered. Today the situation has changed, there are many primers on sale, so choosing the right composition for customers is not so simple. However, the availability of options has always been considered a plus. A special primer can be selected for any specific surface.

First of all, you need to decide on the desired functionality. Primers can provide adhesion and surface hardening.
The strengthening option should be used if the treated wall is loose, porous, has irregularities. The primer for reinforcement further enhances the water-repellent characteristics of the surface. In depth, it penetrates about two to three centimeters, if we are talking about ordinary varieties of reinforcing primers. There are also deep penetration materials that permeate the wall eight to ten centimeters. Adhesive primers are used for dense and even walls when it is necessary to ensure high-quality fastening on the surface of the finishing material.

When choosing a primer, it is necessary to take into account the condition of the walls and their characteristics. Special primers, containing mineral additives, will be required if you need to plaster a new monolithic concrete wall. If you do not use such a primer, applying plaster will be difficult, since it will not hold well.

The most compatible are primers and finishing materials issued by one manufacturer. The recommended type of surface is usually indicated on the packaging of the material. The approximate consumption of the primer per unit area of the wall is also given there. It is worth considering that uneven and porous substrates require more material, dense and even - less. It is recommended to primer not only the walls, but also the plaster, since in this way wallpaper or paint will lay on top of it better. Apply a primer with a spatula, brush or roller.

In construction stores, universal primers are most often found. They should be purchased for small rooms, if it is planned to carry out general repairs there. Concrete surfaces are recommended to be processed with mineral primers. They can also be used to coat silicate brick or plaster. Many surfaces can be treated with acrylic primers. The only exception for them is metal. For metal, special primers are available for sale. Shellac material is available for wood.
