General recommendations

  1. For wall painting, acrylic paints on a water basis are most suitable, as they are bright enough, do not smell, quickly dry and are amenable to adjustment in the process of painting.

  1. To drawings on the wall are not afraid of wet cleaning, they should be covered with matte varnish.
  2. Under the painting is best to take one or two walls, otherwise the interior will be overloaded, and the space will visually decrease.

  1. When choosing a pattern for a wall, consider the orientation of the room to the sides of the world. If the windows of the room look south, you can safely use cold shades (blue, blue, turquoise) for wall painting. If there is not enough light in the room, we advise you to bet on warm shades (yellow, orange, brown, red and others).

  1. The drawing on the wall should fit into the interior of the room in style, color and theme. So, for example, in the classical interior will be good patterns in the style of damascus, heraldry, cage, floral and floral motifs.

In the modern interior, geometric prints, chevrons, horizontal stripes, abstract pictures will be more appropriate.

.

The most versatile prints for painting walls are: a vichy cage or tartan, stripes, rhombuses, plant motifs, Moroccan patterns (pictured below).

Can not find wallpaper with a trendy Moroccan print? Order on the Internet a ready pattern of the pattern or do it yourself following our master class

Also, images of trees (for example, cherry blossoms), flowers and plants are universal enough.

  1. Remember that the vertical lines of the drawing visually draw the walls, but narrow the room. Horizontals, on the contrary, push apart the walls, but do below the ceiling.

Striped wall in the bedroom

  1. If the room is small, then the picture is best to choose not too large, detailed and colorful. It is also worth noting too bright or dark shades in favor of light ones.

  1. Which wall or wall fragment should I choose for painting? Any empty or most noticeable wall in the room, a niche or ledge, a wall in a functional area (or opposite to it), as well as a section above any table, chest of drawers, console, fireplace, bed head, etc. So, for example, in the kitchen you can paint an apron or a patch above the sink, a wall at the dining table or opposite him.

By the way, using a picture on the wall, you can divide the space and denote the boundaries of any zone.

Also for painting are perfectly suitable doorways, corners, space under the ceiling.

Idea 1. Wall painting with a stencil (+ master class)

Stencils are saved when you need to outline the contours of a complex image, draw letters, numbers or any repetitive patterns.

For wall painting, you can use a ready-made template or custom-made in a printing house. Such stencils can be flexible or rigid, one- or two-layer (for creating a multi-color pattern), self-adhesive or glossy. As a rule, they are strong, fit snugly against the wall and are designed for reusable use.

  • Want to buy a super-trendy and unusual stencil? We advise you to search it in the international online store Etsy on the request of "stencil" (price from $ 10 to $ 100).

However, a simple single-layer stencil for painting walls can be done with your own hands, following our step-by-step instructions.

What you need to make a stencil:office paper, plastic film or heavy paper (for example, whatman or wallpaper), pencil, scissors, chancery knife or special knife for cutting stencils, adhesive tape and transparent, as well as a printer and a graphic editor (vector or raster).

What you need for screen painting of walls:paints (best acrylic water-based), synthetic round brush (diameter 7 cm for painting large drawings and smaller - for more fine work), a sponge (you can instead of brushes) and paper napkins to remove excess paints.

Instruction:

Step 1.Find a suitable vector (!) Stencil on the Internet, for example, on the website http://www.getpattern.ru/. Note that the image is desirable to choose a contour (or make it as such, following this instruction), because color areas just waste ink for printing.

  • It is also important that the stencil does not have too thin bridges, otherwise the paint under them can leak and ruin the pattern. Or they can just tear.

Step 2.The selected image must be scaled to the desired size and printed. It is very simple to do this if the size of the stencil does not exceed the A4 size. However, if you need to print a large template, then you need to break it into several parts, following this instruction. Then you just need to collect the picture as a mosaic.

  • If you use a transparent vinyl film, then you just need to overlay it on the original drawing, circle its contours with a felt pen or pen, then cut out unnecessary segments (see. a photo).
.
  • 1
  • 2

Step 3.At this stage, paper A4 paper should be pasted with transparent tape on both sides and overlap (!) To protect the paper from soaking. Finally, cut all the segments to be painted using a chancellor's knife.

If you have printed several A4 sheets for a large stencil, then at this stage you can immediately proceed cutting, however, keep in mind that the stencil will have to be painted with a practically dry brush, so that the paper does not get soaked. But in order not to risk, it is desirable to laminate the picture or copy it to a more dense base (for example, vinyl wallpaper). For this you can:

.
  • Use the carbon paper (lay it between the base and the printouts, and then circle all lines with a pencil).
  • Cut out all the holes for painting from the printed drawing, and then transfer its contours to the base. Next, you need to again take hold of the knife and cut the segments for painting now based on.

Cutting the stencil, do not forget to protect the table from scratches, laying on it any substrate, for example, glass.

Step 4.It's time to paste the stencil to the wall. To do this, try your template to the chosen place, level it on the building level and paste it on the scotch tape. If necessary, for example, if you want to draw repeating elements at an equal interval, you must first make the markup using the building level.

  • If the stencil has thin and movable bridges, fix them on small pieces of double-sided adhesive tape (you can twist a piece of a regular paint tape with a ring).
  • A more convenient way to fix the stencil - with a glue spray with a low level of adhesion, which allows you to remove the pattern easily and without a trace (sold in stores for creativity).

Step 5.Hurray, the most time-consuming work is left behind, it's time to start painting.

  • If you use a sponge:dab the sponge in the paint, remove the excess from the napkin, then start painting the stencil with tampering movements.
  • If you use brushes:dipped the paintbrush in the paint, then move it a little on the napkin to remove the excess (the bristles should be almost dry), then start dyeing in a circular motion. Be careful when painting the area near the edges of the stencil so that the paint does not leak under the holes and does not spoil the contours of the pattern.
  • If you use paint in a can:Spray the paint gently, in thin layers and in several approaches to avoid streaks.
  • If you use a roller:Putting the roller into the trough with the paint, wipe it off the napkin, then proceed to the painting. At the edges of the stencil, move the roller from side to side, and not up and down.

Step 6.When the pattern on the wall dries completely, cover it with a matte varnish to protect it from moisture.

Idea 2. Wall painting in a cage (+ master class)

As you know, the cage is the most versatile print that never goes out of style. It perfectly fits both in the classic and in the modern interior, both in the interior of the kitchen and the children's bedroom. You can decorate one or several walls with a cage using wallpaper or painting.

  • To paint the walls in a cage with your own hands is somewhat more complicated than pasting wallpaper, but the painting gives the best result: the painted surface can be washed, repainted, and most importantly - it does not have seams that risk to get unstuck.

The easiest way is to paint the walls in a large vichy cage as in this selection of photos.

.

Painting walls in a Scottish cage tartan requires a little more effort, but still, it is available even for beginners - after all, the accuracy of the markup, rather than the painting skills, is more important here.

.

And now we offer you to familiarize yourself with the step-by-step instruction for painting the walls with your own hands in the cage of tartans as in the photo below.

What you need:4 colors of the same color, but different tones (this project used light olive for the background, a slightly more saturated marsh shade for vertical and horizontal stripes, even darker for the intersections of the bands, as well as two colors of contrasting colors), brushes, roller, paint tape and laser level, stepladder and other basic accessories for painting.

  • It is best to use the blue painting tape removed without traces, without damage to the wall covering and with the mark "for clear lines".

Instruction:

Step 1.Prepare the wall for painting, then paint it in a background color using a roller. In this master class, the background is a light olive-colored paint. Before proceeding to the next step, allow the background layer to dry.

Step 2.Mark vertical strips of the same width on the wall with a laser level and a paint tape. Then paint their paint darker than the background and allow to dry.

To make the lines straight and clear, and the paint does not become dirty under the paint tape, use a small paintbrush to paint along the tape and a larger brush to color the bulk of the strip. It is important to make sure that there are no excess paint on the brush. The movements of the brush should not be up and down along the tape, but the right-left (across the tape).

Step 3.Now mark in the same way horizontal stripes, paint over them and leave to dry.

Step 4.Place the intersections of the stripes in an even more saturated shade to create the effect of stratifying the threads of the same color in the checkered tissue (as if the cells were darker than the bands).

  • By the way, if you want to paint the walls in a vichy cage, then at this stage the work can be considered finished.

Step 5.It's time to draw contrasting thin strips, mandatory for the Scottish cell.

To do this, again use the laser level and the paint tape, mark the line along and along the center of the vertical stripes. Next, paint them and let them dry. Then draw the same lines along the horizontal thick stripes with the same paint.

.

Step 6.Finally, we draw cells of another contrasting color (in this master class this is blue). The technology is still the same, but the cell becomes larger, since the bands are already drawn along the lines of the first background layer.

Step 7.It remains only to cover the painted wall (s) with a matt varnish to strengthen its moisture resistance and strength.

Idea 3. Hand painted walls

Hand painting of walls allows to create unique and personalized interiors, to embody the boldest fantasies and design ideas.

.

With the help of hand-painted it is possible to correct, disguise or beat some of the disadvantages of the room. For example, draw a missing window, pieces of furniture or accessories, paint a spot on the wall, and so on.

Painted bed head and vase

Hand painting walls is best to trust professionals, but simple drawings are quite possible and beginners, if there is even a small drawing skill. Here are some examples of simple images.

.

The stages of painting the walls with their own hands are as follows:

  1. We are looking for an idea, the motif of the drawing, suitable for the interior;
  2. We plan the composition, develop sketches and choose the final version of the future painting, print out the image in color. It is also advisable to "try on" the pattern on the chosen wall with the help of a photo editor (that is, taking a picture of the wall, laying a sketch on it and scaling the composition in the desired size);
  3. We cover the walls with artistic acrylic primer (preferably);
  4. We transfer the sketch to the wall in pencil with the help of:
  • The projector (the picture is displayed on the wall, then its outlines are simply drawn).

The process of painting the wall from drawing contours to coloring with acrylic markers Molotow:

  • 2
  • 3
  • 4
  • Grids (the wall part under the painting is divided into 100 equal squares, then each square is manually drawn according to the sketch in scale with the same grid).
  • "Stencil" (in Photoshop with the desired pattern outlines are selected, then the sketch is scaled, broken into parts and printed on sheets A4, then the sheets are glued together as a mosaic, glue the resulting canvas to the wall and, according to the principle of the stencil, draw all the lines picture).
  1. We paint the image with paints, paint over the large spots of the composition, study the details. Painting should be conducted on the principle of "from the general to the particular."
  2. We cover the finished painting with frosted varnish. This stage is not necessary, but it is desirable for giving additional strength to the drawing.

Idea 4. Stamping (+ master class)

To paint walls with your own hands quickly and easily will allow the technique of stamping, when patterns or patterns are stamped. In the role of a stamp, you can use both ready-made paint stamps and roller stamps, as well as improvised tools - sponges carved into a circle or other shape, brushes and even your own fingers.

  • Ready-made stamps are sold in construction markets, also they can be ordered in specialized online stores. For example, the Russian company "Ekoboboy" produces excellent stamps (photo above). By the way, the site of the company can be purchased and roller stamps (pictured below).

  • Drawings on the wall, made by a roller stamp

Also, the stamp for wall painting can be made by hand from microporous rubber (foam, foamed polymer or simply "foam") and a piece of cardboard.

What you need:foamy microporous rubber (it is often sold in the departments for children's creativity in the form of colored sheets), cardboard, pencil, sharp office knife, scissors and glue, as well as acrylic paints.

Instruction:

Step 1.Cut out any shape or shape from the sheet of porous rubber. For example, it can be a circle like in our master class, a letter, an asterisk, an autumn leaf, a butterfly, a flower, etc.

  • You can make several different stamps to create a composition, say, a fruit with a handle (pictured). In addition, for each color you need to make a separate stamp.

Step 2.Glue the resulting blank onto a piece of cardboard. Voila, the stamp is ready!

.
  • If you want the stamp to be reusable, you should use a plastic base instead of cardboard.

Step 3.To start painting the wall, dip the stamp in the paint quite abundantly, but so that the paint does not drain off it, then attach it to the wall. If you want the impression to be as clear as possible, the stamp should be evenly pressed.

Then, in the same way, place prints on the entire wall, keeping the same interval. To avoid mistakes, it is advisable to pre-mark the wall. In addition, before starting work, it is worthwhile to practice stamping on any draft.

  • Unsuccessful impression can be carefully erased (provided that you use water-based paint).
  • Additionally, prints can be finished. For example, draw contours, add colors and interesting details.

Step 4.When the stamped patterns dry, cover the decorated wall with a frosted varnish.

Idea 5. Painting crayons on the slate wall

By making one or two walls of chalk wallpaper or slate paint, you will have the opportunity to change the drawings on the wall, at least every day, write down foreign words, lists of cases and products, assignments for households, motivating or simply amusing phrases. Particularly cool chalk wall looks in the interior of the children's room and kitchen.

  • If you want to leave a picture painted with chalk for good, you just have to cover it with matte varnish.
  • Draw on the slate surface can (and need!) Not only crayons, but also chalk pencils, markers and paints.
  • Especially spectacularly on the dark wall looks like lettering (the so-called painted words). However, if you are not a professional designer of fonts and not an artist, then it is not very likely to write words, but you can do it with a self-made stencil. The main thing is to find the right piece on the Internet.

The idea 6. Striped Wall

Striped walls not only look cool, but also visually correct the shortcomings of the room. So, for example, vertical strips "raise" low ceilings, and horizontal - increase space and push apart walls.

To paint walls in stripes with their own hands is very simple, the main thing here is to carefully glue the paint tape and correctly calculate the optimal width and number of strips.

  • To find the required number of bands of the same width, but alternating in color, you need to divide the height or width of the wall into the desired width of the bands. But there is one nuance - if the number of bands is even, then the edges of the wall stripes will be of different colors. In order for the number of bands to be odd and the design of the wall to be symmetrical, you can "play" a little with the width of the strips, or simply divide the height or width of the wall into an odd number. For example, a wall 270 cm high can be decorated with 17 strips 16 cm wide.

To make the stripes on the ceiling and above the floor the same color, they should be an odd number

  • It is desirable that the strips have a width of 10-30 cm. The width of less than 10 cm will be too narrow, and more than 30 cm - too wide and heavy.
  • It is best to draw stripes using a blue painting tape that is removed without traces, without damaging the wall covering and marked "for clear lines".
  • To make the lines straight and clear, and the paint does not become dirty under the paint tape, use a small paintbrush to paint along the tape and a larger brush to color the bulk of the strip. It is important to make sure that there are no excess paint on the brush. The movements of the brush should not be up and down along the tape, but the right-left (across the tape).

Idea 7. Wall decoration with vinyl stickers

Vinyl stickers are good because they are easily glued, peeled off, leaving no traces, are sold in a great variety of pictures and are quite inexpensive. With their help, the decoration of the wall can be changed as often as you want.

Text wall sticker in the interior

Vinyl stickers in the form of words in the bedroom

Vinyl sticker on kitchen wall

  • The largest number of decorative wall stickers can be found on Aliexpress, as well as good pictures can be searched in building hypermarkets and shops for creativity. If desired, you can order the desired picture at the size you need in the printing house.
  • It is best to paste stickers on painted walls or on solid wallpaper.
  • Before you paste the picture, you need to make a markup.
