A good lawn should be evenly green, well-groomed and neatly trimmed. If the means for mechanizing grass cutting are already familiar, then a lawn planter is not often found in the gardener's arsenal. But such a device not only helps to facilitate time-consuming lawn care, but also ensures the most even distribution of seeds in the soil.
Thinking about the arrangement of the lawn, gardeners dream of seeing it green, without bald spots and places where grass density is lower than in neighboring areas.
With manual seeding, it will not be possible to achieve perfect coating quality. Spread from handfuls or from home-made devices, seeds fall unevenly. It does not help even the second, perpendicular to the first pass through the site.
A lawn seed drill solves a problem. But how to choose a suitable design from a variety of devices offered by manufacturers?
Among the planters intended for planting a lawn, there are models strikingly different from each other:
- in appearance;
- dimensions;
- principles of operation;
- priced.
Device and varieties of manual lawn planters
The simplest and cheapest are manual lawn drills. Their smallest varieties are designed for sowing small plots or restoring an existing lawn. These are the rotor devices consisting:
- from capacity for seeds;
- from the device for their submission;
- from a rotary type spreader.
Manage the entire process must be manually, and carry the device on the lawn falls on the hands.
If you need to create a lawn with an area of not a few square meters, but a bit more, then you cannot do without a larger and more productive model.
Such a device is equipped with a more capacious container for seeds, so it is inconvenient to carry on his hands. The wheeled cart allows moving the lawn planter. The man who manages it, remains to push the planter across the lawn and to monitor the complete seizure of the entire cultivated area.
Such seeders differ:
- hopper volume;
- width and density of seeding;
- the presence of additional features.
When planning the purchase of such a device, you need to clearly imagine the area and configuration of the future grassland, calculate the number of seeds for sowing.
In a model with a large bunker, you do not need to constantly sow seed, but at the same time bulky structures will not turn around everywhere, they are heavier and more expensive. Miniature seed drills are many times cheaper, but evenly make seeds with and using seeds only in a limited area.
The simplest and at the same time most accessible models of lawn planters do not provide for the possibility of embedding seeds that have fallen into the ground.
Therefore, after the completion of the first stage of work, it is necessary to roll the site with a special roller, or gently pass the soil with a fan-like rake or level it with a lawn with the back side of ordinary ones.
But all manual lawn seeders can be successfully used not only for their intended purpose. They are also applicable to fertilizer application, both on the lawn and on garden beds, on the potato field or under the fruit trees in the garden.
In winter, salt is scattered on the backyard area by means of a seeder in order to eliminate frost on paths and access roads.
The more extensive the lawn, the more difficult it is to plant it. Therefore, mechanized and professional high-performance models are offered to owners of suburban areas, except for hand-held lawn planters.
Mechanized Lawn Planters
If the volume of single-stage seed loading exceeds 10–15 kg, moving the planter manually is already problematic.
These models are either equipped with a motor and turn into mechanized carts that run on gasoline or electricity. In this case, sowing is even more automated, and more expensive and sophisticated seed drills are equipped with:
- alarm device, triggered by the emptying of the bunker;
- sowing intensity change mechanism;
- regulated seed release.
Trailed and mounted lawn planters are used at large sites, for example, when creating and maintaining grass surfaces at stadiums or in park areas. Because of the bulkiness, high cost, and the need to use tractor equipment, this category of seeders is rarely used at home plots.
