Among such plants is Fatezh cherries, named after the city in the Kursk region and obtained by scientists of the All-Russian State Scientific Institution for Horticulture and Nursery. As the initial form, the breeders used Leningradskaya yellow cherry seedlings, which have already proven their winter hardiness and excellent taste. In 2001, the tests were completed, and the description of the Fatezh sweet cherry variety was included in the State Register in the Central region of the country.
What are the distinguishing features of this fruit crop? What are its strengths, and are there any drawbacks to consider when planting and leaving?
Gardeners who have experience in the cultivation of sweet cherries know that most varieties form tall trees, reaching a height of 5–8 meters without regular pruning. Cherry Fatezh grows up to 3-5 meters, which simplifies the collection of fruits and planting care.
Trees stand out with a spherical, medium-sized crown, which with age becomes more spreading or even drooping. Strong skeletal branches covered with smooth brown bark, depart from the main trunk at an obtuse angle. The young shoots are brown in color, and the thick short stem is grayish-brown.
The branches are covered with large, broadly lanceolate, with pointed tips and finely serrated edges of the leaves. The sheet plates are smooth, but unlike the usual in the middle lane, the cherries are not rigid. The upper side is distinguished by a slight shine and a brighter shade. The leaves are kept on strong petioles, turning into veined reliefs on the back side.
As can be seen in the photo and from the description of Fatezh cherries, the flowering of trees begins as early as 4–5 years old, takes place in the early and middle terms, which coincides with the opening of young foliage. Buds are laid on the bouquet branches and shoots, annuals. White, medium-sized flowers with long stamens and wide halos gathered together in several pieces.

Planting and caring for Fatezh cherries
Cherry Fatezh is valued by gardeners for endurance, stable yield, excellent fruit quality and winter hardiness. Thermophilic culture, thanks to breeders, gained the ability to survive the harsh long winters of temperate climate.
Speaking about the characteristics of Fatezh cherries, we should not miss its high resistance to such common diseases of stone fruit as coccomycosis and moniliosis.
Like Vladimir cherries, traditional for the Moscow region and other areas of central Russia, Fatezh can withstand temperatures as low as –27 ° C.Perennial wood is not damaged. Only flower and growth buds, which the tree quickly restores, can suffer. Even with the freezing of the crown, if there is proper care behind the cherries, the yield of the tree returns in a few years.
The main weak point of Fatezh cherries is self-sterility. To the fruit appeared on the branches, the gardener should take care of planting in the neighborhood of trees of other varieties that bloom at the same time. For Moscow region and more southern regions, the Iput, Sinyavskaya, Chermashnaya, Raditsa and Ovstuzhenka cherries can serve as pollinators of Fatezh cherries. Their pollen will help Fatezhu form a lot of the ovary. Conversely, this variety will be an excellent pollinator for other varieties that have early and medium flowering periods.
