Conditions for gardening in Leningradareas can not be called perfect and even good. Neither the climate of the region nor the composition of rather poor soils contributes to the cultivation of fruit trees. The thickness of the fertile layer in some areas does not exceed 20–30 cm; gardens have to be broken down on peatlands, sands and loams.

The harvests in the North-West region are very difficult, so the apple varieties offered by the breeders for the Leningrad region are highly resistant to frost, resistant to diseases and pests, and the fruits on such trees should ripen as early as possible.

The variety was bred on the basis of Antonovka and the Bellefle-Kitayanka variety by scientists of the Moscow State UniversityM. V. Lomonosov. At the end of the last century, the apple tree was distributed on the Lower Volga and in the North-West of the country, where high frost resistance of trees, good scab resistance and relatively early fruiting are extremely important.

A medium-sized apple with a wide sparse crown is distinguished by a strong mount of skeletal branches. The shoots on the trees are powerful, short, with a noticeable pile and large leathery leaves, also pubescent on the back side. Ovaries are mainly formed on kolchatka, and the mass ripening of fruits often begins in the sixth year after planting in the ground. In quite large apple fruits, the Chosen One is a flat-rounded shape with barely visible ribs, smooth yellow skin and red shading almost over the entire surface. Sweet and sour harmonious taste and juiciness fruits preserve until November.

Apple Melba

Melba is one of the oldest foreign apple varieties that appeared in the Russian garden more than a hundred years ago. The first Melby apple tree obtained in Ottawa in 1898 and since then fragrant juicy fruits are loved in many regions of the world, including Russia, where the variety is zoned in the Leningrad region. Active fruiting of apple trees with a rounded crown begins 4–5 years after planting. Most of the ovary is formed and matures on the collar, and the shoots medium in length and thickness are pubescent and covered with oval, slightly curved leaves of a rather light shade.

The fruiting of young Melba apple trees takes place annually, but with age interruptions can be observed, although the total yield of the variety remains high.

Apples ripen closer to the end of August, are medium or large in size and have a round or slightly conical shape. Very thin, light-colored skin on ripe fruit is decorated with intense striped or blurred blush. Among all the varieties of apple trees for the Leningrad region, Melbu is distinguished by its snow-white, tender pulp with a bright aroma and magnificent taste. Despite the seeming vulnerability, apples are well transported and can be kept cool in the middle of winter.

Apple Aelita

In the north-western region of Aelita apple trees grown as a result of the crossing of Brown Stripe and Welsey, were zoned in 1999.And for the first time the variety was obtained in the VNII.I. Michurin famous breeder, the author of many popular varieties of fruit trees S. I. Isaev.

Despite their tallness, trees with a wide pyramidal crown have pronounced winter-resistance, are not affected by scab and withstand abundant crops even in the conditions of the Leningrad Region. Flowering and formation of the ovary goes on perennial straight shoots covered with elongated dark green leaves with an outstanding pointed conic.

Aelita, a round-conical apple fruit weighing about 120 grams, has a regular shape and a yellow-green basic color, on which a continuous or striped red blush stands out well.

Apples have a yellowish pleasant fine-grained flesh, the best qualities of which are revealed in the middle of September, the fruits are removed from the branches two weeks earlier and stored until the new year begins.

Apple Trees Auxis

In the Leningrad Region and the vicinity of Kaliningrad, a variety bred in Lithuania from crossing Macintosh and Red Grafenshteyskoe fell in the last century and proved to be winter-hardy and unpretentious.

The Auxis apple variety enters fruiting time five years after planting the seedling in the ground. By this time, a medium-sized round-crown tree is formed, capable of producing significant and regular yields.

Flowering starts in the second half of May, and by the end of the summer large, up to 140 grams in weight, apples of the correct form are ripened. In September, at the time of removal from the branches, the apples have a greenish or yellow color with a carmine blush. After 2-3 weeks, the main color turns yellow, the blush spreads almost all over the fruit. You can save sweet and sour dessert fruits of the Auxis apple tree with dense yellow flesh until winter, and when cooled, apples do not lose quality until March.

Description and photo of an apple tree by Welsey

The American apple-tree species Welsey, bred in 1860, is approved for a number of regions in the European part of Russia, including the Leningrad Region. Therefore, many gardeners know Apple trees by description and photo, and also have their own experience of growing medium-sized trees that winter well in harsh climates and are not susceptible to scab. Young apples give their first harvest at the age of 4–5 years.

Thanks to these qualities of the Welsey-based variety, more than three dozen of new apple trees have been developed today.

The variety can be called one of the leaders in terms of yield, since an apple tree with a rounded crown can produce more than 250 kg of fruits per season. True, the branches growing at an acute angle can withstand such a load only if there are good supports, otherwise the breaking of large skeletal branches cannot be avoided. The opening of often folded or curved small leaves is preceded by the mass appearance of pale pinkish or lilac flowers.

Winter Welles apples are medium in size, flattened and covered with a smooth skin of light green or yellowish basic color. According to the photo and description, the fruits of Apple trees are plentiful, dark red, continuous or blurred-red blush and white or greenish flesh. Harvesting takes place closer to the end of September, and it is impossible to delay the removal of fruits, just a week later, apples begin to crumble. In favorable warm years, ripe fruits immediately after harvesting have a sweet-sour taste, but if the season was rainy, consumer properties are reduced. Monitoring the humidity of the air in the storage facility, we can save the Welsey apples that are rapidly losing juiciness until the end of winter.

Apple variety Druzhnoye

Scarlet fruit, resistant to common diseases and frost, apple variety Druzhny is the result of the work of plant breeders at the local Leningrad station, who used unpretentious Antonovka and Jonathan for crossing.

Already in the fourth year in the second half of May, an apple-tree with a dense crown is blooming and at the end of September it produces the first crop, consisting of large fruits weighing up to 170 grams. The apples have a rounded conical shape and a yellow skin with a green tinge. On the surface of the fruit ribs are clearly visible. Reddish blush, speckled or banded. Apples are very dense, sweet and sour, preserving juiciness and taste until the beginning of spring. This quality, together with high yield, adds additional value to this variety of apple for the Leningrad region.

Apple Antey

Large-fruited winter apple variety Antey is an achievement of Belarusian scientists. The variety is obtained from pollination of the Belarusian raspberry pollen from a hybrid apple tree from the varieties of Babushkino and Newtosh. The variety with good winter hardiness and regular fruit bearing was highly appreciated by Belarusian gardeners, and also aroused serious interest in the North-West region. A compact tree with a transparent, easily amenable to pruning crown up to 2.5 meters high begins to form an ovary for 2–3 years after planting and gives up to 50 kg of strong apples stored up to 6–7 months annually.

Weather conditions have almost no effect on the number of Anthea's fruits, as well as their quality, which turns out to be an additional advantage in the northern regions of Russia.

Almost completely covered with dark red or burgundy blush fruits weigh about 200 grams and have the correct rounded conical shape. On the apples is visible wax coating, giving the fruit a bluish or purple hue. Apple picking, depending on the weather in a particular region, starts at the end of September or in the first weeks of October. You can try the ripe sweet and sour fruit of the apple Antey in December. The variety is kept until the middle of the next spring.

Apple Tree Asterisk

Another winter apple variety for the Leningrad Region was obtained at the VNII named afterI.V.Michurin. The asterisk is the result of crossing Anis and Lithuanian Pepinka. The variety begins to bear fruit six years after vaccination, and the apples ripen annually, and the yields are quite large. The culture is resistant to scab, tolerates winters in the Leningrad Region. Adult vigorous trees with sprawling or slightly drooping crown are well formed.

Apple Trees Asterisks respond positively to pruning, responding with larger fruits and laying a mass of flower buds on the middle and outer part of the crown.

Winter ripening apples remain fresh and do not lose consumer qualities until the end of February. With abundant fruiting apple asterisk fruits are medium-sized, even flattened shape with a smooth skin of green color. By the end of the growing season, apples are thickly covered with a dark carmine blurred blush. And their juicy sweet-sour pulp, usually greenish, under the skin can have a pink tint.

Apple Rennet Chernenko

The variety of apple Renet Chernenko, which has become the result of free pollination of aspen Rennet, is zoned in certain areas of the North-West region, including the suburbs of St. Petersburg. Apple trees are vigorous, hardy, tolerate frost well and are resistant to scab damage. For modern varieties, fruiting begins relatively late - after 6–7 years after planting in the ground, and the tree is able to produce from 60 to 170 kg of apples of late winter period of ripening.

The matt-sized fruit of the Renet Chernenko apple has a regular flattened-rounded shape, painted in greenish or yellow tones and on the side facing the sun are covered with a bright red blush in the form of stripes or densely arranged specks. Sweet and sour harmonious taste of white dense flesh persists until almost the end of spring.

Apple-tree Tellisaare

A high-yielding, scab-resistant, high-yielding apple cultivar Tellisaare was obtained by Estonian breeders, and today is recommended for cultivation in the Leningrad region.

The apple trees of this variety have a thick, rounded crown that withstands solid yields of small, up to 100 grams, with a weight of flattened or rounded fruits with a noticeable bevel on one side. The first ovary appears 4–5 years after disembarkation. In the years of abundant fruiting, the fruits sometimes become shallow, or the yield of the following year decreases. The dense apples removed in September have an oily greenish peel with a faint reddish-brown blush.

By October, when Tellisaare apple trees are ready to eat, the light green flesh becomes juicy, fragrant and acquires a good sweet-and-sour taste. Crops of this variety are of high quality, apples are easy to transport and save until mid-February.
