When preparing the cottage for the winter, it is important not to forget about the pipes, especially if during the cold weather you can’t check the condition of the water supply. In order not to find a pipe rupture in spring, a weakened pressure due to cracks or a failed pump, it is necessary to take preventive measures before the onset of frost.
The most obvious and 100% effective option is to drain the water from the pipes, then there will be nothing to freeze. However, not everyone is ready to do this, so it’s worth keeping in mind what are the most popular methods used by experienced summer residents:
- so that the water could not freeze even with a serious minus, you can either create a constant circulation or provide a pressure of about 3 atmospheres;
- someone at the pipe laying stage immediately warms them with mineral wool or polystyrene;
- You can also get a special heating cable for pipes.
In any situation, you need to focus on the most vulnerable places. As a rule, this is the section of the outlet of the water supply from the source and entrance to the house. If pipes have yet to be laid, you need to find out what level of soil freezing is in the area and, accordingly, lay them lower. Usually enough 1.5-1.7 meters. When this distance is not observed, and there is no way to deepen the pipes, you can use the mentioned insulation or use folk trick in the form of an additional pipe. It should be of a larger diameter. The most reliable, of course, is a sewer pipe, but made of polypropylene is also suitable. It should be put on the main one so that warm air from the room circulates through the air gap between the walls of the pipes. The weak point here will be the joints and bends.
The heating cable will help circumvent this limitation, however, it must be remembered that when the power is cut off, heating will stop. Therefore, many rely on the most common means such as mineral wool, it is resistant to temperature extremes, it is easy to install and its life is decent. Some have successfully used foamed polyethylene. Its feature is a foilized top layer that reflects the heat of the pipes inward. Polyfoam is also not bad, tubes made of it consist of two halves connected by a puzzle type, you just need to glue them with a good adhesive tape.
Constant circulation spends a lot of electricity, so you should set a timer to turn on the pump (about 30 minutes). Before installing the receiver to create pressure, you need to make sure that the pipes are really able to withstand such a load.
