At the same time, for beginners, the question often arises of how to drill ceramic tiles - the material, especially with a glazed surface, is very fragile and prone to chips and cracks. In addition, it has a strong abrasive effect on the tools used.
If there is no opportunity or desire to contact professional repairmen, then the technique can be mastered independently.
How to drill tile: preparatory work
Studying the question of how to properly drill the tile, for a start, you should practice on production waste or materials left after wall cladding. From the first time it is unlikely to successfully drill a tile.
It is important to precisely apply markings on the treated section of the wall. To do this, use a piece of masking tape. Not every marking pencil leaves a mark on the tile, and most of the marked marks can be “smeared” with careless movement. Part of the adhesive tape is pasted onto the treated area, and marking is already carried out on it.
Using adhesive tape also facilitates drilling - when working with core, there remains the possibility of damage to the tile and the formation of chips.
The best option to drill a tile is to carry out these works before laying. Before this, you should carefully prepare the workplace: equip an even place of sufficient size on which to lay a piece of material that does not impede the passage of the drill. As such materials can be used:
- tree;
- plywood;
- drywall.
You need to worry in advance about the availability of all the necessary tools before starting work.
Hole Drilling: Tools Required
It is very undesirable to use tools with a shock type of work for drilling such tiles - they can cause irreparable damage to the treated surface.
The following tools are used for drilling tiles:
- an electric drill or a powerful screwdriver: it is important to ensure that when using these mechanisms, the number of revolutions of the drill increases smoothly;
- hand drill: in order to make small holes in ceramic tiles, a manual mechanism is enough, and the number of revolutions in it is convenient to adjust independently;
- standard carbide tipped drills: it is recommended to use such tools after passing through the hardest top layer of the tile;
- spear-shaped drills for working with tiles - the most convenient for creating small holes for dowels;
- hard-layer drills with acute-angled sharpening - the most effective for drilling tiles, enough for a fairly large amount of work;
- diamond-coated drill bits: used most often by professionals; they are convenient to operate when creating a large diameter holes; have a special opening for the conclusion of the destroyed remains tiles;
- drill “ballerina”: suitable for performing infrequent work by beginners, used for drilling holes with a diameter of three to nine centimeters;
- conductors: used to ensure that the drill “does not play”, for greater accuracy; fastened to the wall with the help of special suction cups and prevent the tool from “jumping off” from the place of work;
- water blowers: are used when the drill overheats to supply coolant (water) to the drilling site;
- safety glasses and gloves.
Drilling: general recommendations
To carry out drilling work, do not use too high revolutions: it is enough if the tool creates rotation at a speed of 100 to 400 revolutions. The exact desired number of rotations depends on the type of material and its coating.
In the absence of water blowers and work on a horizontal surface, you can apply the method of local cooling. To do this, a plasticine funnel is molded around the work area, which is filled with cold water.
To properly drill the surface, the drill of a drill or screwdriver should always be placed perpendicular to the area of work. Without special tools, you have to follow this parameter yourself.
You should never neglect the means of protection - work on drilling ceramic tiles is always accompanied by the expansion of small fragments, which are especially dangerous when caught in the eyes.
How to drill a small diameter hole
Tile drilling on walls is the most common type of work under consideration. During the operation of bathrooms or sanitary rooms, it is often necessary to hang a new accessory on an already tiled surface. For such purposes, create holes in the walls of small diameter, in which dowels are placed.
Before drilling, it is important to put the correct markings on the wall: it is not desirable that the hole placed closer than 15 mm to the edge of the tile - there is a high probability of chips and other damage coverings.
Dimensions must exceed the plug diameter for the dowel by 1-2 mm. After passing the thickness of the tile, it is advisable to change the drill bit to a conventional tool for perforating walls so as not to blunt a better part. In the process, you should carefully ensure that the drill does not go downhill and does not damage the tile. After that, carefully plug the dowel into the wall.
How to drill a tile: creating large diameter holes
The easiest way is to use crowns instead of drills. The work with the use of conductors is much simplified. The latter are mounted on the wall with the help of a suction cup, the master only needs to carefully drill a hole of the desired diameter.
It is impossible to call a simple method of using a drill - "ballerina". At the beginning of work, a small hole is drilled in the center of the circle where the centering drill of the tool is inserted. It is important when setting the movable leg of the “ballerina” to remember that in this case the radius is regulated, not the diameter (that is, the size should be halved). Next, tighten the locking screw so that the tool does not move.
When using this tool, you should withstand small revolutions and smooth pressure on the surface of the tile. It is also necessary to ensure that the same depth is maintained when drilling in all parts of the circle. As a rule, the use of a “ballerina” requires refinement of the edges of the hole with sandpaper.
Despite the apparent complexity of this type of work, even a novice master can drill such a tile. It is only necessary to adhere to all the rules and use high-quality tools during the repair.
