What is art deco?

Art Deco in the interior emerged in the postwar period. The beginning of the 20s. XX century.was marked by the desire of the representatives of the upper classes of America and Europe for beauty and luxury after a harsh wartime. Remember the film “The Great Gatsby” - it is this film that best reflects the aesthetics of art deco. The name of the style comes from the name of the 1925 Paris exhibition “Exposition Internationale des Arts Décoratifs et Industriels Modernes”, which was the first to showcase the achievements of this new art direction.

Art Deco style embodies the spirit of scientific progress( the emergence of electricity), the process of knowledge of the world( eclectic style - mixing Western canons with Asian and African motifs), the craving of mankind for beauty( luxury, elegance, decorative loading).

The following is typical for interior design in this style:

  • Mixing decorative motifs of Antiquity, Africa and Egypt, China and Japan with European traditions;
  • Functionality and practicality along with emphasized luxury;
  • Geometrical patterns and design solutions: stripes, trapezium, steps, zigzags, curved lines;
  • Graphicity: frames and contours are the basis of style formation, geometry reigns both in the design of furniture and in the decoration of walls, floor, ceiling, and decorative elements.

Art Deco style is a style for those who appreciate refined luxury, originality and at the same time comfort and functionality.

Art Deco in the large and small kitchen

Luxurious kitchen interior in the style of art deco means a large space, in which there is enough space for sophisticated textiles and decor, elegant finishes and furniture. Therefore, the most striking art deco style is realized in spacious kitchens with an island, kitchens combined with a dining room or living room. See photos, scroll to the right.

However, in the small kitchen and in the modest kitchen-living room in the studio apartment you can realize the ideas of design in the spirit of the jazz era. In this case, the interior should be dominated by light neutral colors, the decor should be used in moderation, and for a visual increase in space you can use mirrors - the most recognizable attribute of the Art Deco style. In the photo below, the interior of a small kitchen-living room is decorated with a large mirror above the bar counter.

And here is another medium-sized kitchen with elements of art deco style, chairs, chandeliers and characteristic colors.

How to sustain style?

There are several basic rules for the design of the kitchen in this style:

  • Art Deco in the interior of the kitchen is appropriate only in quality performance using mainly natural materials: mahogany, dark and rare woods, metals( bronze, brass, gilding, silver, chrome steel), stones( preferably polished), mother-of-pearl, crystal,textured leather, luxurious ceramics and glass. The Art Deco
  • is functional, which means that the working and dining area must be clearly marked. Space can be zoned by arranging furniture, light sources, decor and finishing materials.

  • Chairs, table, cabinets - all pieces of furniture should be mostly of strict geometric shapes, but not modest in decor. For example, chairs can be upholstered in leather or jacquard.
  • The characteristic combination of colors: a neutral background( beige, gray, silver, white) and bright contrasts of furniture and decor( brown, gold, black) or a recognizable combination of black and white.
  • "Frames" should be present in the design of cabinets, upholstery of chairs, paintings or mirrors on the walls.
  • Glitter and gloss are true signs of the era of "jazz modern".Chandelier, accessories, chrome or bronze surfaces of household appliances, glass in furniture and decor can shine.

Art Deco style does not accept:

  • An abundance of soft, smooth lines and circles.
  • Poor-quality finishing materials and furniture - avoid excessive “sham” and unreliable imitations. If a tabletop made of artificial stone can adequately replace the surface of natural material, then a tabletop made of laminated chipboard with imitation of granite is unlikely.

Finishing and decor

Floor

  • The ideal solution from an aesthetic and practical point of view is floor ceramic tiles, stone or porcelain stoneware. The color of the floor should be combined with the color of the walls, but not necessarily repeated. The contrasting dark floor will fit into the interior very organically. Chess order is also appropriate: black and white squares and masonry diamonds with contrast inserts.

Ceiling

  • Ceiling can be both smooth and multi-level. You can decorate the ceiling with the help of built-in spotlights or thin stucco curbs around the perimeter of the room.

  • The main decoration of the ceiling is art deco chandeliers: massive, fancy, often crystal or forged. The chandelier can be one( in the center or above the dining area), the combination of the central chandelier with spotlights or the placement of several small identical chandeliers above the dining table is also acceptable.
  • It is appropriate to use a mirrored ceiling.

Walls

  • Walls can be decorated with wallpaper or tiles with a characteristic art deco style print, stone or paint.
  • Wallpapers can be either monophonic or with geometric patterns, ornaments, African animal motifs, and stripes.

  • The main focus can be on paintings or any other decorative elements.
  • It is appropriate to combine finishing materials: paint and wallpaper, wallpaper and ceramic tile, tile and paint.
  • Work Area, i.e.the apron is decorated with tiles or paint - materials that can be washed, the rest of the room is decorated with wallpaper( or paint).
  • Pictures or photos on the walls are placed stepwise, pyramidally or diagonally.
  • You can replace pictures with mirrors in frames in the form of suns or lamps.

Furniture and household appliances

  • Art deco furniture is made of wood, glass and / or metal. Appropriate inserts of glass and fabric or leather upholstery of upholstered furniture.
  • The use of functional and at the same time original furniture is welcome: barrels, mobile tables-islands of metal and glass, bar counters with elegant bar stools.
  • If the dining area is a significant space, the dining table can be massive, covered with an expensive silk tablecloth, and the chairs will be exquisite - with curved legs, a trapezoidal or oval back.
  • The kitchen suite can be of a neutral color( light wood, ivory, beige, etc.) or a contrast( silver, black and white, dark brown).

The photo below shows the design of an art deco kitchen made of MDF in the color of "Zebrano".

  • The façades of the cabinets are deaf, household appliances are hiding in them. Some, for example, mezzanine top cabinets, may have glass doors - these are showcase cabinets with elegant porcelain tableware.
  • The facades can be glossy, as in the photo below.

Lighting

  • Design in this style is unthinkable without a large variety of lamps: chandeliers, wall lamps, spotlights, furniture lighting cabinets and shelves.
  • In addition to the central lighting is appropriate to highlight paintings, photographs or mirrors that adorn the walls.
  • Geometrical lamps in the Art Nouveau style, sconces in the form of diamonds, trapezoids, and pyramids will look organic.
  • The central chandelier can be made in a classic style - a tribute to the modern: forging and crystal, pendants, massive form, sophistication, imitation of candles. In addition to such a chandelier, wall lamps imitating chandeliers will be appropriate.
  • Lamps are best to choose a warm spectrum.

Accessories

  • As already noted, monochrome wallpapers of neutral shades are an ideal background for placing accessories: mirrors, paintings, photographs. To emphasize the belonging of these accessories to the art deco style, it is necessary to purchase the appropriate frames and frames: sun, trapeze, multi-level steps.
  • Eclectic style is reflected in the use of vases, shaped like Chinese or ancient Greek, with stylized images of the sun and geometric patterns. It is also appropriate to use textiles with an animal print( primarily, a zebra skin), images of exotic landscapes and decorating the room with living plants( in particular palm trees).
  • Statues of athletes, ancient Greek heroes and heroines will also be appropriate.

The interior of an art deco style kitchen is a fancy combination of conciseness and chic, functionality and decoration, when all the details from the design of chairs to textiles should be thought out and complete.
