video Long before the famous English lawns and green lawns of the French part of the palace garden in the Middle East and North Africa was the Moorish lawn. The invasion of Muslims in the south of Europe left an indelible imprint on the local culture. Traits of Arab tradition to this day are noticeable in architecture, cooking, lifestyle and gardening.

Green lawns with neatly trimmed grass are no longer uncommon in home gardens. Such coatings are durable and decorative. But many owners of such lawns, or those who are just thinking about arranging their own plot, consider that compulsory haircut is tiring. Not less skeptics, it seems that solid green in a vast area is boring.

Is there an alternative to green grass? There is! Both groups of opponents of classic English lawn can pay attention to the Moorish lawn.

Pros and cons of the Moorish lawn

For many years lawns on which not only cereals grow freely, but also ornamental plants were almost forgotten. Only a few years ago, interest in them began to rapidly return.

Today you can find areas of Moorish lawn in the largest publicly accessible gardens in the world. And the reason for the growing popularity is in the mass of advantages of such a choice.

Blooming lawn meadow:

  • does not require frequent and rather tedious haircuts;
  • does not need constant attention;
  • is content with minimal care;
  • can grow on nutrient-poor soils;
  • is easier to renew;
  • is varied, as the flowering of some crops gives way to others and lasts from early spring to late autumn.

Moorish lawn mowing is done twice. The first haircut is in early spring, when the grasses are already growing, and the perennial and annual flowers have not woken up yet. The second occurs in autumn, after the shedding of seeds of flowering plants. The rest of the care is not much different from what gets a classic, green grass cover.

But with so many advantages of the Moorish lawn, several of its features can be attributed to the minuses:

  1. It is not recommended to break it over a large area, otherwise the laboriousness of care increases dramatically, and it is much more difficult to keep track of planting.
  2. It is extremely important to competently select the composition of the Moorish lawn, especially flowering plants. If you make a mistake, you will not be able to create the effect of continuous flowering, or the cultures that flourished in the first year of the next season will disappear from the lawn without a trace.
  3. It is necessary to ensure even sowing of cereals and ornamental crops. For this, the seeds are mixed not only with each other, but also with sand.

If you carefully approach the implementation of these points, the Moorish lawn will be an excellent and durable decoration of the site.

Composition of the Moorish lawn

Whatever the name of the lawn, but its basis is always unpretentious perennial grass. In Russian conditions it shows itself best:

  • meadow bluegrass;
  • individual species of bent;
  • timothy;
  • ryegrass pasture.

The seed mixture of these plants prevails in the composition of the Moorish lawn and can reach up to 80–95% of the total volume. That is, decorative perennials or annuals remain around 5–15%.More is not required, otherwise the landing will be thickened, and the proper effect of the site is not achieved.

For sowing, they often use low and unpretentious plants that are not afraid of proximity to other crops, have long flowering periods and easily tolerate the winter. In the selection of annual plants pay attention to their independent sowing and ability to germinate together.

These plants in the Moorish lawn include:

  • cornflowers, which today are offered not only the traditional blue color, but also white, pink, lilac shades;
  • is a stunted variety of cosmea, which is sown on its own in the fall, and next year it sprouts together;
  • large-flowered flax;
  • Calendula;
  • marigold;
  • nemesia;
  • ages and many other cultures.
